Considered by Alfred Barnard 'too well known to need any praise' the Highland single malt distillery of Glenglassaugh, by Portsoy was established in 1875. Its fortunes mirrored those of the Scotch whisky industry through boom and bust, until it was mothballed in December 1986. It seemed unlikely that Glenglassaugh would distil again - until it was unexpectedly purchased by a Dutch investment syndicate in February 2008. Over £1m was invested to refurbish the plant; an experienced team recruited and distilling began again in December 2008. Ian Buxton is well-placed to write or talk about whisky and drinks. A former Marketing Director of Glenmorangie, Scotland's long-time favourite single malt, he lives in Perthshire on the site of a former distillery from where he conducts a love affair with Scotland's national drink!

Ian began work in the Scotch Whisky industry in 1987 and, since 1991, has run his own consultancy business. In that period, his clients include Bacardi Corporation (USA); Brown-Forman Corporation (USA); The Drambuie Liqueur Co; William Lawsons; John Dewar & Sons; William Grant & Sons; Morrison Bowmore Ltd; The Tomatin Distillery Co; Ben Nevis Distillery; Glenmorangie plc; The Scotch Whisky Heritage Centre; The Scottish Liqueur Centre; Highland Distillers (Highland Park, Cutty Sark); Glenglassaugh Distillery and other distilled spirits companies and brands.

Ian was elected a Keeper of the Quaich in 1991, the highest honour of the Scotch Whisky industry. He is an occasional member of the international tasting panel for Whisky Magazine's 'World Whisky Awards' annual awards and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Distillers. He founded the World Whiskies Conference and was its Conference Director for 6 years before resigning in 2011 to concentrate on his writing.

As well as giving lectures, presentations and tastings on whisky, he writes regular columns for Whisky Magazine, the leading UK consumer title, and has contributed to its sister title Scotland. In addition, he writes for The Malt Whisky Yearbook, Just-Drinks.com, WhiskyEtc, The Whisky Advocate, www.forwhiskylovers.com and elsewhere. He has presented on the web based channel www.singlemalt.tv and at a number of tasting events. He advised the SWA and the National Archives of Scotland on the 2009 Homecoming exhibition Whisky and the Scots for which he also wrote the accompanying monograph.

In 2002 his book Scotch Whisky: History, Hints and Tips appeared and subsequently he was one of the principal co-authors of Eyewitness Whisky and World Whisky for DK Publishing. 2010 saw three new books by Ian: The Enduring Legacy of Dewar's; Glenglassaugh: A Distillery Reborn and 101 Whiskies To Try Before You Die (Hachette)- the latter now available in Chinese, French, Hungarian and Portuguese (for Brazil).

In 2011, he edited and contributed to the official history of Cutty Sark, Cutty Sark: The Making of a Whisky Brand and wrote the history of Glenfarclas for their 175th anniversary - Glenfarclas: An Independent Distillery.

101 World Whiskies to Try Before You Die, his latest book, was published in July 2012.

I had the pleasure of visiting the distillery with the Distillery Manager 2008. Ian Buxton did a remarkable work with this book, retracing the history of the distillery and recreating the atmosphere I experienced during my visit.
The book reads smoothly and it is nicely illustrated by photographs of Ian Macilwain.

Perfect account of a Highland distillery at Portsoy. Buxton's narrative is nice to read. Best information about the history of a coastal distillery. The binding is poor.
