Product Description

Review

Canadian Glenn Gould was one of the most celebrated classical pianists of the twentieth century, particularly for his interpretations of the music of J S Bach. Although his work was dominated by Bach, he also recorded music by Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, Brahms, pre-Baroque composers such as Jan Sweelinck, and contemporary composers such as Paul Hindemith and Arnold Schoenberg. Gould was famously eccentric in his unorthodox musical interpretations and personal behavior. He stopped giving concerts at the age of 31 to concentrate on recording and was also a writer, composer, conductor and broadcaster. This splendid box set of 6 CDs features Gould the concert pianist in unprecedented depth. The recordings range from 1951, when he was just eighteen years old, to 1960, a few years before he gave up concert life. They include all of the genres in which he performed live - solo works, songs, chamber music, concertos - and cover almost the whole range of his repertoire. The earliest work here, by Bach, dates from the early eighteenth century; the latest, by Ernst Krenek (who befriended Gould, and outlived him), was composed in 1943. In between are composers who were central to the young Gould's repertoire: Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Schoenberg and Webern. Included here are some of his warhorses but also several works of which he never made an authorised studio recording or broadcast, as well as a few interpretations that differ significantly from those in his official releases. The music, mostly previously unreleased, has been digitally restored and comes with extensive notes by Kevin Bazzana. Essential listening for all fans of the last puritan . --http://www.new-classics.co.uk/html/piano.html

The first thing that strikes me, listening to all these recordings, is the sheer intensity of expression in the live performances. What an extraordinary communicator Glenn Gould was in front of audience! All the great pianists like Richter, Rubinstein or William Kapell had the amazing ability to penetrate right into the essence of music and communicate it to listeners with such immediacy and intimacy, Gould was in the same league.

And, what an outstanding concerto player he was! Listen to the performance of Weber's Concert Stuck in Fm, when Gould was only 18 years old, which out-dazzles even Horowitz or the magnificent performances of Emperor Concerto and Brahms' 1st Concerto, which reveal unexpected detail of the scores and are full of inspired moments (and in line with more orthodox interpretation). How deeply passionate he was, not only in such repertoire, but also in atonal music by Schoenberg, Webern and Krenek. The audience may not have understood the music, but the excitement is palpable. Gould loathed the whole aspects of public performance, but it makes you wonder how he might have developed as an artist if he had not abandoned his concert career.

6CDs contain various live recordings which were either previously unreleased or only available among limited circles of collectors. The recording quality is surprisingly good (except the distortion in one track from Schoenberg's Suite for piano) if you consider these are either broadcast or private recordings made between early 50s and 60s. Comes with very informative and interesting booklet with notes by Kevin Bazzana and lots of photos.
