Product Description

Product Description

The Glen 2kW G2S convector heater is ideal for use in any room (except bathrooms) where there is no heating, or heat is required unexpectedly. The gentle heat provided by this compact convector gives a comfortable heat without making a sound, and it's choice of heat settings offer greater user control. Additionally the G2S can be used either freestanding so that it can be moved from room to room, or wall mounted (brackets included) for a more fixed heating solution. The G2S has a neutral white and light grey finish for unobtrusive application, plus BEAB Intertek Safety Approval and a 1 year manufacturers warranty. Wall brackets are located on the underside of the heater, please refer to instruction manual.

Convectors are an ideal alternative to a fan heater when it comes to heating a room. They are larger and designed to be used either freestanding or wall mounted. They come in a choice of outputs ranging from 750W to 3kW, and many feature energy saving features such as thermostats, choice of heat settings and timers. Certain models also come with inbuilt fans to extract the heat from the body of the product quickly and effectively. They are ideal as a form of low cost heating when an extension to a house has been built as they simply require mounting to the wall with brackets provided and plugged in. Far easier than extending the central heating system.

I unwrapped it, plugged it in, and worked for a wee bit -- kind of
a gasoline smell, but otherwise ok. After 10 mins or so it gave up the ghost
and never worked again.
Perhaps it was just a fluke, however I note:

-- there's no indicator light, so you can't tell if it's on or not.

-- the two settings are very crude: on full blast and not-on-very-much-at-all

-- the documentation consisted of one page, which covered many different heaters with completely different features -- without saying which sentences applied to which model. So you had to read the whole thing with
the words "if applicable" applied to every line. Perhaps they were saving
money on technical writers?

I found one of these in our house, a student property. The heating having given up the ghost for a day, I set it up in my room.

If you buy one of these, the first thing you'll notice is how light it is. When you look inside, it is painfully apparent why this is. This is certainly a "no frills" job. It has 2 positions, I or II. The circuit is almost literally a wire plugged into the mains that heats up, little in the way of active temperature control. It doesn't have any circulation system so you'll need to leave it on for a long time to heat up a room. The coils inside heat up to varying degrees of red (and you can see this through the grille in the top). There are hot spots and some areas where little heat is at all - in other words it's pretty uneven. I'm not entirely sure why they bothered putting such a large case round it, the top 80% of the thing is empty air. Whatever you do, don't look down it in case you drop something onto the elements - god knows what it'll do.

This thing is a fire hazard just waiting to happen. As mentioned, it's basically like they've shorted the mains through a slightly resistive wire - i have little doubt that the temperature control switch is just a choice of resistor.

In summary, don't waste your money on this. The circuitry is shoddy, the housing is cheaply made and your house is worth more to you not burnt down. Pay a little extra!
