5.0 out of 5 stars Harvey does it again, 30 Nov 2007

This review is from: Glen Coe (Superwalker) (Hardcover)
Glencoe is such a great area for walking, and I've had some great times there with the help of this map. That makes it hard for me to be objective about the map; am I confusing the quality of the map with the quality of the hills? I don't think so; this map really is a joy to look at even at home on winter evenings when you've no chance of getting out into the hills. The mapping is very bold and clear and colourful, which makes it easier to read than the 1:25,000 OS maps. The map covers one of the best and most accessible mountain areas in Scotland, from Kinlochleven in the north to Loch Etive in the south west. I count eighteen Munros on the main map, with two more on the Ballachulish inset on the reverse side. Also on the reverse side is an expanded (1;12,500) map of the most popular hills on either side of Glencoe itself. These include the Aonach Eagach ridge (generally agreed to be the best ridge walk in mainland UK) and Bidean nam Bian, the highest mountain in the area. Also on the reverse side are panels with tourist information (with useful phone numbers), a glossary of Gaelic names, notes on access and mountain safety, and notes on the colours and symbols used on the map. A lot of information, in fact, which makes this map more useful than any guide book light enough to stuff in your pocket or rucksack. You really do need it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cracking Map, but not up to very high expectations., 25 May 2011
This review is from: Glen Coe (Superwalker) (Hardcover)
I have just received this map and haven't yet used it in anger. First impressions are great. The clarity of the map is brilliant when compared to the OS map and the waterproof paper adds extra piece of mind when you know the weather could turn.

Only 4 stars though. It's let down by the high expectations gained from the other reviews. A previous review mentioned inset maps on the reverse, which my "edition" does not contain. The area covered is smaller than expected too, with Ballachulish not on the map. Glencoe is the western most extent of the map, and to the south it descends with a dog leg, giving a smaller E-W extent in the southern half of the map.

In summary the map itself is fantastic, the lack of expected coverage and additional insets is the only disappointment. I suppose I just wanted more of it.

This review is from: Glen Coe (Superwalker) (Hardcover)
This is the first time i have used a harvey map and it certainly won't be the last!! Not only are they clear and easy to read but are waterproof too!! Wonderful to have when in this dreary Scottish climate. I shall be telling my walking friends about them.
