I must say that I really did enjoy this tale. Okay, so some of the themes have been explored before (namely in the Drizzt novels), but I am already working out how to incorporate some of the ideas in my campaign. While the relationship between Vheod and Melann can be guessed at from the very first time they meet, it could have done with a little exploration, rather than them riding off into the sunset together. Will there be a sequel to The Glass Prison? I'm in two minds as to whether I'd want one...

What starts off with great promise soon evaporates into internal psychological warfare with the main character Vheod. A half-demon escapes from the abyss to seek a better life and is ostracised by the other inhabitants of Toril just because he's different. It's been done before by R.A.Salvatore with his character Drizzt, and done much better. It's a pity that Monte Cook decided to concentrate on Vheod's internal struggle about adjusting to his new surroundings than giving the book a bit of action. By the time you've got through the mid-section babble you wander whether you can be bothered reading the end. His love interest in the book is Melann, but there's no bonding generated and you never feel like they'll hit it off so to speak, so when they do it's like 'how did that happen'. It's not all bad, the beginning and end are quite decent. If you chopped out the middle of the book and presented it as a short story it would be pretty excellent. If Mr Cook put some action in the middle of his next book and developed Vheod's unique abilities then we're looking at a sure winner!
