Product Description

Review

From grande dame to dishevelled duchess and a return to splendour. This book celebrates the greatness of the hotel. The most interesting part of the story is the people: the staff, the guests and others associated with the hotel. Book of the Week - The Herald --The Herald

The night Roy Rogers booked the bridal suite (…..and shared it with Trigger) --The Mail on Sunday

Packed full of information, inside stories, reminiscences and the history of the hotel. This book is a must, especially if the hotel conjours up happy memories or even if it's a building you pass when hurrying for a train. --The Scots Magazine

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic read 25 Feb 2012
Format:Paperback
From beginning to end, this book tells you all that you need to know about the fall and rise of this beautifully restored institution. From all the famous faces to the people who have and still do put their heart and soul into making it the place it was and now is, and hopefully will be in years to come. Having been in it before its restoration and now fully refurbished it is true the photos do not do it justice. It is fantastic to see the old menus, memorabilia and photographs of old and new staff. Well worth the read. A book to pick up and read again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love the hotel - love the book 14 Feb 2012
By Moira T
Format:Paperback
Being a longtime fan of Glasgow's Central Hotel and being a sad witness to its decline I was delighted to see this book about the history of such a lovely old building.
The book is informative and begs you to read it in one sitting.
The history of the hotel's origins; stories of hotel staff and guests both famous and not so famous sit well with the closing chapter describing the rescue and subsequent relaunch of a very popular venue.
Beautifully illustrated even though the photographs cannot do justice to the real thing as hopefully readers will see because I'm sure this lavish book will entice them to visit in person!
Many of the older photographs of celebrity guests such as Gene Kelly appear on the walls of the hotel now and are a reminder of the glory days of the old place.
Only downside to the book was the advertisement for the hotel group that now owns the Grand Central.

This is a beautiful book that anyone who knows or visits Glasgow will cherish.
The authors explain the history of the building of the hotel in the railway mania days of the Victorian age right through to the refurbishment of the last few years. But there's lots of Glasgow history too, and the chapter on the stars who visited is perfect for anyone who loves the Hollywood era.
Having treated friends to the afternoon tea there, and enjoyed the wide corridors, sense of space, and lovely champagne bar, I thoroughly enjoyed dipping into the stories about the hotel from the people who worked there, and the detail on the history. I would have loved more stories from people who worked in the Hotel, but overall this book is a beautiful treasure. I got a big sense of the detail of the upstairs/downstairs mentality, and the social code. The detail on the man who grew up in the hotel is amazing. He met many stars who stayed in the hotel when visiting and I'd love to know more about him. Glasgow is very lucky to have such a place - the piano at the bottom of the staircase and that amazing chandelier would be perfect if The Central could afford to put on the occasional pianist (like the Savoy in London). I would recommend this colourful, lavish book to any fan of railways, Hollywood, and social history. It is a magnificent book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun, good value 17 April 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Fascinating social history with additional interest for those who know the Hotel directly or lived through any part of the period. Wide range of interest from press photos of celebs to interviews with veteran hotel staff and revealing history of the village whose remains lies beneath the Central Station. I bought two: one for me and one for my sister.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely gift 26 April 2013
By ZELDA
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Bought as a gift for someone who regularly visited 'The Central' as we Glaswegians still call it. Did not disappoint and looks good as well. More than just a coffee table book, which has now started off many 'do you remember when' discussions. Highly recommended.
