5.0 out of 5 stars I am still laughing!, 4 April 2006
By Katharina (Rostock, Germany) - See all my reviews
Having been a fan of Smack the Pony for quite a while, I felt the urgent need to get the very first movie of the three extraordinary, witty and chameleonic actresses together. I hoped for it to be good, but in fact it was brilliant. Watching it for the first time, it will make you laugh here and there. The irony, the subtlety of the humour and yet the directness of some jokes unfold their strength only after you have seen the movie. Images and scenes will hit you unexpectedly during your daily routine, and ultimately the second, third or fourth time you watch 'Gladiatrss' you will laugh your butt off. It would have been a pity if Fiona Allen, Doon MacKichan and Sally Phillips had not worked together on a filmic piece that is not 'just' a series of minute-long sketches. It was great to see them develop three interesting, yet extremely contrasting characters. It must have been an extremely difficult task to create and also bring to life three characters, which are each 'outstanding' while none of them takes on the leading role or really 'stands out' against the others. However, this was successfully done. Gladiatress certainly is a highly amusing movie with an ingenious humour, an excellent cast, brilliant performances and a great director. Thanks for such a wonderful film!

2.0 out of 5 stars Carry on Gladiatress, 24 Dec 2006
By P. Smith (Vienna) - See all my reviews
This film really misses the mark. I watched it as a huge fan of British cinema actively and patriotically wanting it to be good. It does have its moments with a few witty throw-away lines and anachronisms (giving you echoes of the Asterix series) but the talents of 3 fine comic actresses (the ever-reliable Sally Phillips does very well as the delightfully named Worthaboutapig) cannot prevail against such a dire script. The idea of gladiatresses taking on the Roman Empire was such a good one too and to succeed the film could have chosen to parody "Gladiator" or even done a "Green Wing" surrealist take on the whole thing but instead and unfortunately the producers opted to make "Carry on Gladiatress" and this wholly dated format just isn't the vehicle for the idea (and delivers about the same level of laughs as the 'Carry on...' series.) The best joke of all is saved for the DVD cover where you have, in homage to the iconic 70s Athena poster of the woman tennis player, the question, "Does my Gluteous Maximus look big in this"?

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally stupid and very funny indeed, 3 Sep 2009
By Mr. Mark E. Vincent "WSAT Oldman" (Wales) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I only caught the end of this film when it was on BCC 1 late one evening and enjoyed what I saw so much that I ordered the DVD and I was not disapointed!

I had never seen Smack the Pony or any of these commediennes before but I just found the whole film hilarious. Yes, it it totally silly but it is also great fun and whoever thought of the name 'Worthaboutapig' certainly earned their salt that day. Each time I have watched it I have laughed out loud, sometimes even harder than the previous time through.

If you feel like something light, enjoyable and very funny then I can recommend this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very funny
Lots of chuckles with the 'smack the pony' team. It's not a classic, but it's cheap and worth a watch.
