This 'Making Of..' book is an absoloute 'must have' for all Gladiator and Ridley Scott fans. As well as including some brilliant photographs, it gives details of the cinematic process through costume and architectural sketches and explanations of how the spectacular digital effects were achieved; particular highlights being how the Colosseum was recreated from dust, or the bringing to life of the opening battle scenes in a Surrey forest. It is a thoroughly enjoyable behind the scenes account, including interviews with the stars of the film as well as some lesser mortals! At the end of the book is a section of excerpts from the story with screenplay, photo stills and storyboard drawings. This is a great way to relive the Gladiator experience again without the aid of a VCR! My only criticism is that for real die hard fans, there really isn't anything here that we haven't seen or read about before, through TV documentary or newspaper articles. There are no amusing stories or cheeky photos to satisfy all us wannabe extras. It is all rather serious! Having said that, you get exactly what the title describes 'The Making of an Epic' and it is done brilliantly.
