Glad Tidings is a celebration of familiar Christmas Carols with the settings and instrumentation and singing of West Gallery choirs of the 18th and 19th Centuries.
This recording featuring the Mellstock Band who specialise in West Gallery music is a colourful collection of familiar Christmas pieces. Often taking reference from Thomas Hardy and the Hardy family, the Mellstock Band have rich understanding of the customs of old England.
West Gallery music is the distinctive harmony singing tradition that flourished in rural English Churches from the early 1700s to the mid 19th Centuries.
The people that played this music often had no formal education but learned from their close community the ways of singing and celebration of English Traditional customs. This recording brings us a strong flavour of that time.
The Mellstock Band have used a variety of sources to research the style of singing and playing and this recording provides a wonderful atmosphere of rural folk tradition. The Mellstock Band are on top form here.
I thoroughly recommend this album and for more of the same sort of thing look at Hey For Christmas
At the time of writing this review the CD version is not available on Amazon. This is a terrible shame and if you get he chance to get the CD version, take it. The CD version has better sound quality than the MP3 download.
The Serpent Press records and Amazon should endeavour to maintain the CD format.
