The transfer of the film is okay (considering it is a fairly old film) however the English subtitles are woeful - large stretches of dialogue are omitted. The story and cast are wonderful though and I've longed and longed for a proper UK release of this film. Why are so many films not available in this country?

5.0 out of 5 stars La Bonne Annee - Happy New Year, 11 April 2010

I have been after this film for a long time but it has become a bit pricey. However, it is a crime thriller masterpiece of cool!

It begins with a reference to "Un homme et une femme" and you think that perhaps the wrong dvd has been put in the box, but this is the Chrismas movie in a French prison and our laconic, super cool hero, played by Leno Ventura, is being released early - ostencibly as part of a New Year amnesty but in reality so that the police can follow him to find out where he stashed the money from the job that put him inside. After his release the film moves from black and white to colour and the story of the robbery and a love affair unfurls.

This is a gem. About 30 years old. I am surprised that the Americans haven't re-made it. De Nero or Al Pacino would play the part.

If you enjoyed "21 Quai Dorsee" or "Tell No One" or just like crime thrillers, you've got to see this one.

It's not fast but it's cool!
