More About the Author

Many people are very surprised to hear that Gizzi Erskine was a professional body piercer in Camden before realising her life-long dream of being a chef. It wasn't until the age of 23 that, after 7 years of working in Cold Steel in Camden, Gizzi hung up her piercing tools and trained at the prestigious Leith's School of Food and Wine in 2003. She graduated the top of her year and went on to win a placement at BBC Good Food magazine, where she started to establish herself as an award winning food writer and stylist. During her first years at catering school she cheffed her way through many kitchens and started her own catering company with friend, Abbey Dempsey.

A career in TV started with the popular C4 primetime show, COOK YOURSELF THIN, which went onto a 2nd series in 2009, this time with Gizzi as the only host. With C4 firmly backing this exciting new talent, she has since appeared in IRON CHEF, COOKERY SCHOOL and DROP DOWN MENU for the channel. Gizzi joined Sky Living as a new face of the channel and hosted new series Cooks To Market alongside Gu founder James Averdick. The show saw amateur cooks be given the chance to turn their homemade food products into a life-changing business. The show will return for the second run early next year.

As a food writer, Gizzi is a Contributing Editor for InStyle, Sunday Times Style and Fabulous Magazine, and has written for a wide variety of magazines and newspapers such as Marie Claire, Elle, Elle USA, Vogue USA, GQ, The Times and The Evening Standard. She also recently had the honour of hosting the Observer Food Monthly awards alongside Jay Rayner.

GIZZI'S KITCHEN MAGIC, published by Virgin Books in 2009, was her first solo book and received critical acclaim during its release. Gizzi was the co-author of the hit cookbook COOK YOURSELF THIN, author of MY KITCHEN TABLE: 100 FOOLPROOF RECIPES and has also contributed to COOKERY SCHOOL by Richard Corrigan. Not one to rest on her laurels, her next book - SKINNY WEEKS AND WEEKEND FEASTS - is out at the end of March.

Always at the forefront of any trend, Gizzi was one of the first to back the trend of the pop-up restaurant scene having opened 4 pop-ups in the past 3 years; one with Innocent Smoothies at the Tramshed in Shoreditch, one at Clarence House in association with START the sustainability charity, a Tiki lounge at Bestival and an East London gourmet pie shop. She has cheffed at many supper clubs for guests like Boy George, Adam Ant, Sadie Frost, Pearl Lowe, Carl Barrat and Grace Woodward. Her most recent pop-up took inspiration from the Korean hole-in-the-wall scene in New York: Gizzi's 'K Town' at Concrete in Shoreditch was an underground eating, drinking and music venue with a menu that was created and cooked by Gizzi. Entertainment ranged from rockabilly, soul and ska bands, to live Korean burlesque and a Korean Elvis impersonator.

Gizzi has also teamed up with Italian restaurant Zizzi to mentor the next big thing in food - chef Joe Gray - as part of the Prince's Trust Tomorrow Campaign. Gizzi and Zizzi created a special three-course menu, which currently features in all restaurants nationwide to raise money for The Prince's Trust charity. Other mentors involved with the campaign include Zandra Rhodes, Kelly Hoppen, Rankin, Liz Earle and Wayne Hemingway.

Her edgy attitude has caught the attention of the fashion world and she regularly makes the fashion pages of the UK's style press. She has effortless style, unmistakably 60's with a Rockabilly twist, which has struck a chord with the public, helping her bridge the gap between food and fashion.

I bought this book when it was recommended to me on Amazon as i had already purchased the 'cook yourself thin' book which Gizzi features in.

I like to try my hand at cooking, mostly baking but i have never been taught any technique or skill for cooking and tend to shy away from anything that looks difficult! This book couldn't be better for me. At the beginning of each chapter she explains everything you will need in simple terms. It's like having a little cookery lesson as well as just the recipes, although not patronising at all. She includes alternatives in all the recipes for those who want to try something different.

Perfect for me (a beginner!!) to learn traditional cooking and then incorporate it into modern recipes and i imagine this would have some great ideas in for more experienced cooks as well!

Gizzie's Kitchen Magic is a fab cookbook. She had cleverly balanced basic recipes to tempt and give confidence to the novice or newcomer into the kitchen whilst also giving plenty of recipes with a little twist for those who cook already and are looking for a little inspiration.

I fall into the second category, so here are a taster of some of the recipes I fancy trying: marinades for a whole chicken including Malaysian Satay Marinade, Coq au Vin with Herby Dumplings, Lamb Massaman Curry, Lamb Chops with Green Peppercorn Sauce, Bailey's Chocolate Croissant Butter Pudding, Rosewater and Cardamon Creme Brulee with Pistachios, Pineapple Cake with Lime-Soured Cream Frosting and Blond Rocky Roads.

The recipes give a nod to tradition and what works, but are presented in a really stylish and up to the minute form.

Having seen Gizzi Erskine on Cook Yourself Thin as well as reading her column in Company magazine, i was delighted to hear that she had written her own cookbook.

I was very excited when the book arrived Tuesday and it didn't fail to disappoint. I am not ashamed to admit that i am an amateur chef who until September had never created a whole meal for myself.

I love the fact that Gizzi's recipies give you the basic recipie and then ideas on what to try to make it a little bit different. She never patronises and her recipies are simple to follow, but with fantastic results. Where as a lot of cookbooks seem to include a few recipies, a lot of pictures and a lot more waffle, Gizzi's Kitchen Magic is crammed full of recipies - she obviously lets her food do the talking.

The things that i am looking forwad to making the most are Chicken Katsu Curry (a particular Wagamama favourite of mine), Black Cod with Plum Miso, Five Spice Pork Belly, Sticky Banoffee Pudding and her Baileys Chocolate Croissant Butter Pudding.

All in all i think its an interesting and informative cookbook.

Gizzi's first book has inspired me to cook more interesting recipies. I loved all the tips and tricks which were simple to follow at the beginning of each chapter. Every recipe I tried worked well and was extremely tasty. I loved the fact that the book covered both simple and easy to the more complicated. Also that the recipies were both very British in some respects and very international in others.

The people I would reccomment this book to are basic to intermediate cooks who would benefit from the tips at the beginning of each chapter, which I found extremely useful, (Advanced cooks would enjoy the book too) I felt that this book should be on every kitchen bookshelf!

Gizzi's kitchen magic really works - lots of basic tips and explanations for the clueless, with some foolproof recipes that can help anyone cook real food - even me. Her explanations are starting to sink in, and I'm able to transfer them to other meals too.
