Essential Classics for Curtis fans

I was very happy to see these albums packaged together on one CD, they are two of my favorite Mayfield albums as they find the Poet in what seems to be one of the happiest times of his life. Each song is a celebration of love, hope and new beginnnings with the exception of "Mr. Welfare Man" which provides Curtis with a chance to make one of his classic statements against the injustices of his time, many of which are still relevant to this day. These two albums come on the heels of a string of incredible recordings beginning in 1970 with "Curtis", "Curtis Live", "Roots", "Superfly" & "Back In The World" all of which were soundtracks to the Black Power Movements and the struggles for "minorities" in the USA.
Beginning with "Give, Get, Take and Have", we see a much lighter side of Curtis. A man who seems to be in love with his life, wife, romance, children and his inner soul. Although, he still recognizes the overall injustices of that day, as "Mr. Welfare Man" so wonderfully demonstrates, his personal life seems to be at an all time high and he pulls back the curtain to give us a glimpse of where he's at and the current happiness he's now enjoying. With songs like "In Your Arms (Shake It), "This Love Is Sweet" & "P.S. I Love You" we hear the Poet turn his lyrical genius away, briefly, from social issues to the matters of the heart and love. One of my personal favorites is "Soul Music" with it's rhythmic flow that's sure to please the listener.
On the follow up album released in 1977, "Never Say You Can't Survive", we hear Curtis delveing deeper into matters of love and emotions. From the heartfelt cry of a lover needing the touch of his woman on songs like "Show Me Love", " Just Want To Be With You" & "When We're Alone" to songs that almost seem to deal with the loss of love and the need and reason to keep moving on as "Never Say You Can't Survive" & "When You Used To Be Mine". These songs and albums show the incredible versatility of this wonderful artist and give us glimpse of life being lived to it's fullest. This album also showcases his Acoustic guitar playing which is absolutely incredible, he truly was an incredible artist in every way and sorely missed.
