very enjoyable 4 Nov 2006
Format:Audio CD
I like this album, although I must confess the film was rather dissappointing. Having read most of Mr Heaton's reviews (as below) and finding myself agreeing with him on most occasions, I do find that I have an opposite point of view here. I have always liked the idea of the individual Beatles reworking some of their great songs. Although I do hate most cover versions by other artists. The fact that McCartney has done it here has raised questions. Although "Yesterday" sounds very simular with only a horn section included the improvement in sound quality makes all the difference as it does on "Good Day Sunshine". For me the new version of "The Long and Winding Road" is at least as good as the original and the sax solo is simply beautiful.

"Ballroom Dancing" from the "Tug of War" album gets a great work over with the inclusion of some great heavy guitar riffs, much better than the original and even "Silly Love Songs" for me with it's new futuristic sound is great and McCartney plays a fantastic bass solo. A great version. The two new songs "Not Such a Bad Boy" and "No Values" are good McCartney rockers and have a very live feel, which is the way it is in the film, the band rehearsing in an attic. The album and film received poor reviews which makes me think that McCartney will be reluctant to re-work more Beatles and Wings classic, but I for one would like to hear some of the old sixties numbers with new production and a few new ideas. That is why for me "Tripping the Live Fantastic" was such a great live album because the new sounding Beatles numbers, "Fool on the Hill" is just amazing. However on a negative side the inclusion of a further two versions of "no More Lonley Nights" on the McCartney Collection calalogue version of this album is a bit too much.

I first saw the film of the same name on tv some years ago, it was then I fell in love with the music, as this album combines some Beatles classics such as "The long and winding road" and "Yesterday" with his own classic such as "Silly Love Songs", it was about 23 years ago that I bought the album on cassette, I have been playing it for such a long time, that the tape has somewhat withered!, so to get this fantastic album on cd was fab, as now I can play it over and over again!. This album measures up to the superb talents of Paul's works, it's very pleasing to listen to time after time, and to sing along to with the old favourites within the album. This is one of his best albums, I would go to say that it is a masterpiece, and it is as fresh as was when it was first releashed in 1984 as it is today.

Celluloid Mc Cartney 23 Jan 2002
Format:Audio CD
This album is very unique and a great buy as it has some superb tracks and some almost aternate versions of old ones(Eleanor Rigby for one).Note that it features Ringo, JeffPorcaro,EricStewart DavidGilmour GeorgeMartin amongst others."Ball room Dancing"is one hell of a rocker and so is "No Values".If you want some "corridor music"as Paul calls it, it is here.A beatiful instrumental piece of the classic "Eleanor Rigby" aptly called "Eleanors Dream".It is surely a dream and a great one at that.Dont forget to listen to "Not such a bad boy" the final track on side one.Look at it this way, buying this album is surely money well spent as it is a beautiful blend of "vintage'Paul and "new-age"Paul.Moreover the Original Soundtrack from the only film (so far atleast) which stars Paul and has music by him too.

As a film it didn't really work. And as an album even less so. For at least in the film there is some kind of point in reworking old songs, although a pretty tenuous one it must... Read more
