Product Description

CD Description

GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADSTREET was a 1984 musical adventurefilm that was loosely based on a day in the life of Paul McCartney. While the film was a spectacular flop and perhaps the most embarrassing project that McCartney has ever been involved with, GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADSTREET's soundtrack album features some exceptionally good music. The album opens with "No More Lonely Nights", a haunting, bittersweet ballad that is one of McCartney's best.
Backed by a hard-hittingband that includes Ringo Starr on drums and guitarists Chris Spedding and Dave Edmunds, McCartney also gets a chance tocut loose on several raunchy rockers ("Not Such A Bad Boy" and "No Values") that prove that McCartney had not lost his ability to create raw, back-to-basics rock and roll. While McCartney's remakes of Beatles songs like "The Long And Winding Road" and "Eleanor Rigby" (and a bizarre remake of the Wings hit "Silly Love Songs") do not improve on the originals, his heartfelt, spirited performances of these classic songshelp make GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADSTREET one of McCartney'sbest albums of the eighties.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pointless, 4 Mar 2004

Now wingspan has No More Lonely Nights and the playout version of that track, there really is no point in getting this album.

The vast majority of these tracks are re-worked old songs in an inferior form, and with the remastering of those tracks in their original format it means that the novelty of this record, which was to provide a sort of greatest hits before All the Best and Wingspan with cleaner sounding recordings, has worn off.

Not that any of the songs are bad, but its just not worth getting them in this format.

4.0 out of 5 stars very enjoyable, 4 Nov 2006

I like this album, although I must confess the film was rather dissappointing. Having read most of Mr Heaton's reviews (as below) and finding myself agreeing with him on most occasions, I do find that I have an opposite point of view here. I have always liked the idea of the individual Beatles reworking some of their great songs. Although I do hate most cover versions by other artists. The fact that McCartney has done it here has raised questions. Although "Yesterday" sounds very simular with only a horn section included the improvement in sound quality makes all the difference as it does on "Good Day Sunshine". For me the new version of "The Long and Winding Road" is at least as good as the original and the sax solo is simply beautiful.
"Ballroom Dancing" from the "Tug of War" album gets a great work over with the inclusion of some great heavy guitar riffs, much better than the original and even "Silly Love Songs" for me with it's new futuristic sound is great and McCartney plays a fantastic bass solo. A great version. The two new songs "Not Such a Bad Boy" and "No Values" are good McCartney rockers and have a very live feel, which is the way it is in the film, the band rehearsing in an attic. The album and film received poor reviews which makes me think that McCartney will be reluctant to re-work more Beatles and Wings classic, but I for one would like to hear some of the old sixties numbers with new production and a few new ideas. That is why for me "Tripping the Live Fantastic" was such a great live album because the new sounding Beatles numbers, "Fool on the Hill" is just amazing. However on a negative side the inclusion of a further two versions of "no More Lonley Nights" on the McCartney Collection calalogue version of this album is a bit too much.

2.0 out of 5 stars Avoid, 28 Mar 2005

As a film it didn't really work. And as an album even less so. For at least in the film there is some kind of point in reworking old songs, although a pretty tenuous one it must be said. But at least 'Eleanor's Dream' is atmospheric on film and in some other cases we get to see Paul perform the songs. But on record, the remakings of 'Here There And Everywhere' , 'Yesterday', 'Good Day Sunshine' and 'Eleanor Rigby' are thoroughly pointless and vastly inferior to the 1960s originals. There is a case for arguing a case of writer's block on the part of McCartney circa 1984. There are also re-writes of 'So Bad', ' Ballroom Dancing' and 'Silly Love Songs' from the solo years. Why? And of the new songs, only the superb 'No More Lonely Nights' is up to any kind of scratch. It is utterly brilliant. But one song cannot carry an album unfortunately. The two new rockers 'No Values' and 'Not Such A Bad Boy' sound like Back To The Egg rejects. The former was apparently from a dream Paul had in which The Stones performed this song. Well I can't speak for Mick and Keith but I rather think this would not have warranted a place on their album from this period 'Undercover' (1983), so utterly bland is the lyric and melody and tempo. I'm not saying that these tracks are dire, just that they are so lacking in any inspiration. And we have become accustomed to at least expect some of that with McCartney's work. The reworked disco version of 'No More Lonely Nights' is perhaps the most annoying thing he has ever released.

This is a fan speaking. Who hated all those turkey jibes which surrounded the release of this film. At least as a film it may one day have its day, in the way that 'Mystery Tour' has had. I doubt it. But as for the album, it will remain at the rock bottom of all McCartney's solo releases. It has neither the bravery or daring of a misjudged solo album nor the coverage or best versions to warrant classification as a compilation album. It a thoroughly mixed up version of both, with very little to recommend it I am afraid. Aside from one stupendous track, which can be found elsewhere.
