Current rock'n'roll orthodoxy is to talk about Marianne Faithfull's career in terms of two distinct periods adorned by two distinct voices. First, there was the angelic and haughty trill of her (artistically underrated) early work. Secondly, after years of debauchery and a spell of homelessness - a ragged, bitter croak emerged in its place. Some say that this is the voice she has used ever since - but with time, Faithfull was able to find new depth in it (no pun intended). Particularly, and often-ignored, is a warmth and a melancholy tinged by wisdom that has shone through her recordings since "Strange Weather" in 1987 and continues to do so here.

This is probably her best album in a decade, which is higher praise than it sounds because 2005's "Before The Poison" is one of my favourite albums of all time, and a strong contender for Marianne's best album that isn't "Broken English". Despite her recent bad health, Marianne seems to be in better voice here than on her last album. High(er) notes which seemed out of her grasp before seem effortless again, although a few tracks see her more content to speak rather than sing. This is not a bad thing, because her speaking voice has always been brilliantly full of character. It's a wonder she hasn't been asked to contribute to more spoken word pieces.

As with all of her high profile collaborations in the past, Marianne holds firmly the centre stage throughout the album. The title track is deceptively bouncy and touches on the 2011 London riots. 'Sparrows Will Sing' is full of reverb and feedback and is wonderfully anthemic. The folky 'Love More Or Less' recalls her 2011 take on Lesley Duncan's 'Love Song' and is just as beautiful.

I can't say I've ever been a big Marrianne Faithful fan, I've always found her later stuff too dramatic and theatrical but I was pleasantly surprised by this record which combines Marianne's throaty, expressive vocals with some really nice rocking backing making a surprisingly good mix on songs like the title track, "True lies" and "Sparrows will sing". And Marianne's version of "The Price of love" knocks Bryan Ferry's into a cocked hat. There is still the drama here of course but integrated with the music on songs like the folky "Love more or less" and "Deep water" but I'm afraid that "Late Victorian holocaust" was just a step too far for me. Overall I thought that this was a very successful record, not surprising really with gifted contributors like Roger Waters, Nick Cave, Steve Earl, Anna Calvi and Brian Eno.

She's done it again!

God bless Marianne Faithfull! A brilliant new album with co-writing credit on the majority of tracks , this ranges from cheerful shanty (the title track) to some intense dark moments that we haven't heard since 'Before the Posion' - and it all works and hangs together beautifully!

As an album this is up there with her best, and as much as I loved 'Horses....' and 'Easy Come...' I think this one has returned her to her real powers.

Can't wait to see her live!!

Although her last studio album was only released in 2011, 'Give My Love To London' really does feel like a big comeback release from one of Britain's most enduring female vocal talents. Marianne Faithful's voice may have seen better days, but it's still special. She delivers all eleven tracks with a prominant lisp, and although she sings witheringly, her voice is assuring, expressive and easy on the ear.

I think that 'Give My Love To London' is her best release in a very long time, and filled with songs that are just as good as some of her finest work in the past. The title track really is joyful and had me from the first play, sounding very Irish. There are some excellent dramatic, theatrical ballads like 'True Lies', which she has always done so brilliantly, but for me the real highlight is 'Love More Or Less'. This poignant little folk song with the gorgeous production is enough to almost move you to tears.

'Give My Love To London' is proof that once you have it - you never lose it. I think this album should please all of Marianne's fan base, and is likely to win her some new fans. The songs are so real, true to life, the production is first class, and Marianne's lisp becomes strangely more appealing after each listen. A true original - I am forever a fan of her.

This CD is a big disappointment. Faithfull's voice sounds fractured and croaky with quite a prominent lisp and a whistling sound. She talks her way through some of the tracks, rather than sings, and it makes for uncomfortable listening as you feel she won't hit the notes. The lyrics are sloppy too. Unless you're a mega fan I wouldn't buy it.

The finest work Marianne has produced in many years!
The voice of a strong willed woman, often sounding vulnerable and heartbroken. It compliments the wonderful songwriting, sounding fresh yet somewhat 'retro'.
Highly recommended if you are a fan of Ms Faithfull's earlier work.
