Product Description

Pippa Laud has escaped! Armed only with her college duffle coat, Italian Without Tears and the shabbiest suitcase in Europe, she has left England, her pompous ex-boyfriend and once-promising legal career to start a new life teaching English in Tuscany. The enchanting city of Lucca promised serenity, culture and la dolce vita. But behind its noble walls lurk Machiavellian minds and more sinister mysteries than the workings of the school photocopier. Pippa blunders heroically into the labyrinth of deception and death - but who can she rely on to help her out again - Muriel and doggy English expatriate, sartorially-challenged Commissario Guinizelli, or only Pierrotino, the bravest cat on the Lucchese rooftops? Exuberant and witty with un po' d'amore, this is the perfect entertainment for anyone who has ever travelled hopefully, drunk too much limoncello or wondered where the Carabinieri take their moustaches on a Sunday afternoon.

5.0 out of 5 stars The English crime novel moves to Tuscany 13 Jun 2006
By A. Roe
Format:Paperback
Set in historic and beautiful Lucca this is the story of Pippa Laud's venture into teaching English as a foreign language amid a highly eccentric ex-pat community.

As soon as she sets foot on Italian airport tarmac we are left in no doubt - Something Odd is Going On....

Scarcely has she dragged the tattiest suitcase in Europe onto the premises of the "Piccola Casa d'Inglese" than she is tripping over dead bodies and sinister machinations.

The heroine is very engaging as is the rather un-Italian Policeman assigned to the case.

Together they unravel the truth behind the baffling goings-on and develop more than a merely convenient working relationship.

Tanya Jones has a light and charming touch - her descriptions of place and character are always entertaining and a lot is contained in a few cleverly chosen words.

She maintains a tantalising mystery right to the end and yet manages to fill the book with references to all kinds of bits of grit currently in the oyster between Britain, Europe and the U.S.A. with phrases so quick you almost miss them.

I recommend this book strongly to anyone who would like to escape to Tuscany while sitting in their garden chair and enjoy a good old-fashioned (and funny )English crime novel among the glorious medieval walls of Lucca.

4.0 out of 5 stars Humour in Tuscany 1 Jun 2006
Format:Paperback
Tanya Jones has a gift for seeing humour in all kinds of situations. This novel brought back memories of holidays in Tuscany and highlights the differences of the various culture groups there with an eye for comedy.

The humour may over ride the story line in some instances but I can recommend it for a good light read.
