Book Description

2 Jan 2003
Dissatisfied both with writing a "Single Girl on the Edge" lifestyle column and with her boyfriend (who has a name for his car and compulsively collects plastic bread ties), Ruby Capote sends her best columns and a six-pack of beer to the editor of The New York News and lands herself a new job in a new city. In New York, Ruby undertakes the venerable tradition of Poker Night - a way (as men have always known) to eat, drink, smoke, analyse, interrupt one another, share stories, and, most of all, raise the stakes. There's Skorka, model by profession, homewrecker by vocation; Jenn, willing to travel as far as it takes for true love; Danielle, recently divorced, seducer of at least one father/son combo in her quest to make up for perceived 'missed opportunities.' When Ruby falls for her editor, Michael, all bets are off. He's a challenge - and something of an enigma. But is he merely interested in making Ruby a better writer - or a better prospective girlfriend?

Product Description

'Jill Davis's Girls' Poker Night is every man's worst nightmare - a candid look at how the other half thinks and feels. Ruby Capote is a smart, neurotic, maddening heroine against whom very few male poker players would stand a chance. I certainly hope this is fiction.' Jay McInerney 'Jill Davis captures exactly what it feels like to be a single woman on the verge of falling in love; what it feels like to risk everything and cross the line from distrust to trust, from not believing to believing. Girls' Poker Night is funny, sad, and full of perfect little truths. It's one of those rare books that you read and think, I know that woman. She's me.' Laura Zigman 'Girls' Poker Night is a smart, funny, and wonderfully grown-up novel.' Susan Isaacs 'Girls' Poker Night is blithe, engaging, off-the-wall funny.' Joan Didion

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book - You will read it again and again! 31 Jan 2003

Girls Poker night is a funny, heartwarming tale of Ruby and her world. It's a journey that we can all relate to especially as each poker night reveals a little bit more of the highs and lows of Ruby and her friends. It's a fast-paced read that you will not want to put down. Jill Davis weaved a poignant story about courage and the search for happiness. I pick this book up frequently just to get a giggle. I highly recommend this book - it's like spending a weekend with old friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty, witty, witty 31 Mar 2002

Wonderful, witty and wise. First novels don't get THIS good! The author is a pro. She wrote for David Letterman for many years. And it shows. The book is so smart and funny. It's also got style, class, substance and a solid story of risk at its centre. I highly, highly suggestthis book. You'll read it twice in one weekend even though I have a life.

What a fun read. I devoured this book in a weekend. Ruby Capote and her mates take on the game of poker, and learn more about life the I expected them to. This is a moving, funny book that takes you deep into friendship, love and growing up. I actually laughed outloud.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant & Witty 3 April 2002
By A Customer
Bridget's American cousin. She's a little wiser, a little less morose, and just as funny. Ruby Capote and Bridget would be best friends if they ever met. There is a great story at the heart of this romantic comedy. This is a first person account of a young woman on the verge of maturity, falling in love and testing her own ability to go after a 'happy ending' The first line of the book says:"Happy endings aren't for cowards." I laughed. I related. And I read it twice in the course of a week even though I have a job and a squeeze.
