A few gems. 6 Feb 2011
By D.L.J.Mann TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
"The Girls Of Rare Rockin' Records" features 32 girls/groups from 1960-66 that have (probably) never been released on CD before. Much of it, quite frankly, is twee and seems to have more in common with the previous decade than the material found on other girl comps covering a similar period. It's raunch free, sanitised Rock'n'Roll with a distinctly white sound that parents probably tapped their feet to.

Stand outs include future Ikette Pat Powdrill's 'Luckiest Girl In Town' (written by David Gates) - it's the only time on here you'll hear the Bo Diddley Beat. Toni Wine's 'A Toy Is Only Made For Play' sounds fairly similar to 'I Only Want To Be With You' but no where near as good. Ginette Reno's 'Here Comes The Heartache' is suitably dramatic. Robin Hart's 'I'll Get You Yet' is a fabulous slice of girl pop and along with the aforementioned Pat Powdrill is the comps best find. Cee Cee Joy's 'Dribblin' Around' is a lot of fun in the novelty vein featuring some honking R&B sax that seems to come of of no where.

For girl comp enthusiasts this is not on the same par with Ace's superb series 'Where The Girls Are' or RPM's 'Dream Babes'. And unlike those comps there are no sleeve notes which seems a wasted opportunity considering the rarity of these records and the relative obscurity of the singers. Each track however is dated as is the release label. And of the 8 page booklet 2 are taken up with ads for the label itself - there are some pictures of the singers and records but the design and execution looks decidedly amateurish.

1. Pat Powdrill - Luckiest Girl in Town
2. Sheila Guthrie - Mirror Mirror
3. Carol Hughes - Hello Heartbreak
4. Susan Wayne - That's What I Love About You
5. Jane Morgan - Oh, How I Lie!
6. A.Z. Mortimer - When You're Talkin' Love
7. Carole & Sherry - Join the World Outside
8. Kelli & the Kittens - What Mama Don't Know
9. Loran Dune - I'm Going With Bobby
10. Margaret Lewis - Johnny's Cash or Joey's Love
11. Lacey Jones - I'm Gonna Tie Him down
12. Lorrie Darnell - Nothing Went Right
13. Molly Bee - He's My True Love
14. Barbara Lyons - Dear Buddy
15. Judy Scott - No Questions Asked
16. Bertha Colbert - Rain in Lovers Lane
17. The Capri Sisters - I'm Gonna Wish For You
18. Sherry Sisters - Two Flights Up
19. Cathy Saunders - Making Believe
20. Eileen Barton - Patty Cake - Patty Cake
21. Susan Singer - Johnny Summertime
22. Toni Carroll - Overnight
23. Ruth McFadden - Don't Take Your Love
24. Toni Wine - A Toy is Only Made For Play
25. Jean DuShon - It Won't Stop Hurtin' Me
26. T & T - Perfectly Proportioned
27. Ginette Reno - Here Comes The Heartaches
28. Robin Hart - I'll Get You Yet
29. Susan Lynne - Even Though
30. Cee Cee Joy - Dribblin' Around
31. Ruth McFadden - It Could Be Sweet Again
32. Clairette Clementino - It's a Pity to Say Goodnight

Mediocre Fayre 23 Jun 2011
By Mrs. T. A. Papworth TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Obscurities abound on this cd, all tracks have been taken from the original vinyl sources and NOT FROM the MASTER TAPES (according to 'Rare Rockin' records this is 'to maintain a dynamic oldies sound' - in my opinion I prefer listening to tracks that have been remastered from master tapes). As a lover of girl group and femme pop 60's music I found most of the 32 tracks to twee for my liking. Many of the other tracks are mediocre, lacking that certain something that would make them good or great. It's not all bad news as there are a few good tracks and one or two outstanding ones - 'A Toy is Only Made for Play' an unreleased demo by Toni Wine is great and the cd's outstanding track in my opinion is 'Mirror Mirror' by Sheila Guthrie. You pays your money, you takes your choice.

Mostly Pixies 18 Mar 2011
By Richard
Format:Audio CD
Remastered from the original vinyl by Australian collectors they certainly are the "luckiest girls in town" according to the balloon on the sleeve which takes its subtitle from the first song by Pat Powdrill who was a future Ikette.Other black girls here are Azie Mortimer whose "Lies" has been well anthologised, the wonderfully named Cathy Saunders,Ruth McFadden and Jean Dushon a jazz singer who made 2 albums for Chess.
Longest established here is Eileen Rodgers who charted in the 50s with Miracle Of Loveonce before she dabbled in High School and the token British girl is Susan Singer whose better known cousin was Helen Shapiro. She cut around half a dozen singles all in high school vein and this particular one Johnny Summertime is modelled on Sam Cooke's Twistin the night away.32 songs and definitely good value.
Bear in mind that the lack of info is because none was known in Australia anymore than it was here
