5.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 14 Nov 2006
My best childhood friend and I used to hire this film nearly every week!

In the days when velcro and tab were cool and Sarah Jessica Parker was a frizzy haired youth and things were fine!

This is one of my favourite films of all time. I was 11 when it came out and it was the first DVD I bought when I got a DVD player. I've just been listening to all the songs and I still remember the words to "Technique" and "I Can Fly" and "Shout". I'm smiling away to myself remembering how brilliant this movie is and I would suggest any little girl or woman with a little girls' heart sees it! 10/10 - Janey and Jeff forever!!!!!!!!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great 80s nostalgia! 21 April 2011
The 80s was the very last decade that one could define by any means of fashion, style or music. Sadly, once we sauntered into the 90s, all that could define a decade did not exist (try watching a movie from the 90s and 00s - and try guessing its year - you probably can't...) Today it's just a cocktail of all that's gone before - no originality - nothing unique... The 1950s, 60s, 70s & 80s were all decades that were instantly recognisable by their style, fashion and type of music. This movie is no exception!

Okay, so it's no great blockbuster or masterpiece, but it's one of those films with a great 'feel-good' factor and very watchable. It's also full of nostalgia with the great 80s sounding music and fashion. It's amazing how dated this looks now - but is from a time when people were still having new ideas.

Hard to believe it's almost thirty years ago...

5.0 out of 5 stars That's all they really want! 12 Jan 2003
By A Customer
"Getting Into Trouble Is Easy...But getting Out Of It Is All The Fun!"
This movie from the mid-80's at last gets a much deserved re-release on DVD. Starring Helen Hunt, Sarah Jessica Parker & a very young Shannon Doherty, Girls Just Want To Have Fun is comparable to Dirty Dancing (GJWTHF was made 2 years earlier though) and is about 2 teenagers, Janey (Parker) & Lynne (Hunt) who both dream of starring on 'Dance TV' a Chicago music show. It's a sweet, funny, romantic comedy that gets better with every viewing. Helen Hunt steals the show as Lynne!
I won't give away the story but the dancing, romance, nuns, spoilt brats, comedy, music and brilliant one-liners make for great viewing. I love this film and if you like Dirty Dancing, Fame, Flashdance, or romantic comedies you'll love this. It's a fun film & I'll be glad to get it on DVD as my video copy has been watched countless times. A brilliant soundtrack as well, hope this gets re-released as well in time!

5.0 out of 5 stars a childhood fave 26 Mar 2005
From an early age i've been addicted to videos whether it was 'mannequin' or 'vice versa' and so on. However, it was 'Girls just want to have fun' that became my favourite film, which meant repeated and repeated rental from the video-man. If you enjoy fims with dance such as 'Flashdance' and 'Fame' you are given the bonus of a sweet romance. This film stars the talents of the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt pre-fame. It does not pretend to have a great plot yet is highly watchable and contains a good dance routine at the end that so far has only been rivalled by 'Bring it on'. Definitely it is cheesy but sit back and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything I remembered it to be, and more! 4 Feb 2012
25 years ago, this movie held a really special place in my heart. All I can say is that it certainly did not disappoint 25 years later. Sarah Jessica Parker & Shannon Doherty when they seemed almost normal! Loved it, loved it, loved it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Stuck in the 80's? 6 Jun 2006
By Zoe
Shallow and sugary storyline a la Molly Ringwald, but the main role is played by a young Sarah Jessica Parker(of "Sex & The City" fame)who is delightfully perky in her quest to win a dance contest on television, despite her parents wishes. It's a predictable film, but deserves credit for being so mercilessly upbeat. Worth watching for the comic relief in the form of the 'wacky' best friend, played by a young Helen Hunt(pre-"Mad About You").Look out for the bizarre head gear that she sports in every scene, including some plastic dinosaurs at one stage. No reason is given for the hair adornments, but I guess that they had to make up for the poor storyline somehow. Worth catching this movie with a couple of girlfriends who grew up in the era for some 80's-bashing/reminiscing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! 13 Jun 2005
By Lana
Format:VHS Tape
I wish I could go back in time and hug the video shop man who recommended me this video in 1985 as it is still my absolute favourite today! I bought the sound track too and still love it. The dancing / gymnastics (especially at the end) just give me a chill down my spine. One thing, what happened to the lead male? Never heard of him again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great 80s Girlie Dance Movie 31 Aug 2012
I actually bought this movie thinking it was a film from the 90s because of the more recent cover (Sarah JP & Helen Hunt as adults), but when I watched it realised it was an 80s dance movie and I can say being a dance fan I have watched it about 5 times since I've had it. So the story isn't amazing, but it's a fun movie with great dance sequences and a bit of teen romance! I prefer it to films like Flash Dance because there is a lot more dance in it.
