4.0 out of 5 stars Axe-filled garage bliss, 21 April 2009

This review is from: Girls With Guitars (Audio CD)
Girls with guitars is surely what we need, especially if they are electric guitars, and they are not in short supply on this 24-track pheromone-fuelled collection from Ace. At first glance most of the names may seem unfamiliar but the copious notes in the fact-filled 20-page booklet show that there was some considerable pedigree amongst the producers, arrangers and writers if not the performers, and even here there are one or two familiar names, such as Darlene Love, Fanita James, Grazia Nitzsche, Genya "Goldie" Ravan and Pat Powdrill from the Ikettes. Goldie and the Gingerbreads were known in the UK for their Decca singles, but the four tracks here were recorded earlier for Scepter subsidiaries in the States and were unheard over here. The album description also mentions the appearance of Jackie DeShannon under a pseudonym, but there is no documentation of this on the record and I was unable to identify her. Actually, it doesn't matter how obscure these singles are, especially in the UK, where they were unlikely to be heard on the radio; as always, it's what's in the grooves that counts, and Ace, in the form of compiler Mick Patrick, has not let us down in this axe-filled female celebration of adolescent noise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Compilation, 24 Sep 2005
By Robert Alan Bryan "JettBlackBerryX" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Girls With Guitars (Audio CD)
I really like this set but Amazon's track listing is a bit off.
This list below is the actual track / band list.
Some bands are featured twice; Goldie and the Gingerbreads are featured 4 times.
I've also included the years of each song.
The compilation goes from garage punk to girl power pop.
Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars ...and they know how to ROCK OUT with them too!, 4 Oct 2004
By uthungus - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Girls With Guitars (Audio CD)
So what, by this collection's title might you expect "Girls with Guitars" to mean? Happily by the rare compilation actually put together here it means LOTS of variety and not just instrumentals that (listening to them) you'd be hard pressed to determine who actually did the songs. Toward the end there are a couple of them ("Rock City" and "Sticks and Stones"), but that's fine. Not an imbalance out of 24 tracks. Also a couple carried over from an earlier "Girls in the Garage" release "Boy What'll You do Then", and "Only Seventeen" , but again these blend in well enough here that I don't mind it so much personally. The stand-out quality of this collection to me is that it's really a great span of various 60's sounds. Starting out with some "Surf-arific" beats - "My Baby", "Boys Can Be Mean", "V.I.P", "Come on Along" and "I'd Rather Fight than Switch". The last two of this list also fit in to other categories too. "Come on Along" reminding me of something Bow Wow Wow might have done in their heyday. "Fight than Switch" (The Tomboys) also delightfully carries over in to the fun, silly novelty tunes category with lyrics like "...that little girl told you a lie, lie, lie! She said I found another guy, guy, guy...!" Other great silly tunes include "Do the Dog", "Skinny Vinnie", "Chew Chew Fee Fi Fun" and "Hully Gully Guitar". What names some of these girl bands had too! "Goldie & the Gingerbreads" and "Sugar & the Spices" ?! You'd expect nothing less than fun! Also rounding out the 60s sounds were the later decade folksy, "Patridge Family-sounding" tunes like "They are the Lonely" and "Help me Boy". Ending it on that note, other enjoyable things are found here too, this is a great investment in rarity, IMO. Enjoy!
