Book Description

2 Oct 2007 Blood Coven Vampire Novels (Book 3)
Third in Mancusi's hip, sassy vampire series, featuring the heroine of "Stake That!"
She's a vampire. She's also a vampire slayer. (It's a long story.) And now Rayne McDonald, Goth girl, has to carry out her most deviant mission yet: trying out for the cheerleading squad.
Rayne already has enough on her plate: her twin keeps whining about whether or not to go all the way; her mom's boyfriend is moving in; and her man, Jareth, who's now allowed out in the sun, has turned from a dark, brooding hottie vamp into a surfer dude.
But this vampire slayer is still on the clock, and she has a new assignment. A member of the football team has disappeared-and her bosses at Slayer Inc. think the cheerleaders had something to do with it. Now they want her to infiltrate the squad and get the dirt. But first, she'll need an extreme prep makeover. If only they'd let her wear fishnets under that revolting uniform.

When we first met Rayne McDonald, she was getting ready to become a vampire, only to have those dreams taken away from her when the guy who was supposed to transform her bit her twin sister instead. Then she discovered that her destiny wasn't to become a vampire but to slay the bad ones. So she then joined Slayer, Inc. to fulfill her destiny, only to have one of her missions bite back -- literally. And the vampire who bit her, Maverick, infected her with a virus, and the only way to be saved was for Jareth to change Rayne into a vampire. But now both are infected, and Rayne is on leave since Slayer, Inc. just can't ruin their image by having a vampire as one of their employees.

The good thing is that Rayne and Jareth can stay in the sun. The bad news is, they are pretty much the weakest vampires out there, physically.

Now back in school, Rayne thinks she doesn't have any problems to worry about. That is, until Slayer, Inc. decides to give Rayne another mission.

Turns out that the star football player at Rayne's school, Mike Stevens, is missing, and the cheerleaders are the suspects, since it seems like they aren't just regular cheerleaders, since regular cheerleaders aren't usually werewolves, too. So now Slayer, Inc. wants Rayne to be a little less goth and a bit more preppy, and to try out for the cheerleading squad, which would makes this the worst mission EVER! Of course Rayne can't deny the mission, since she still has the nanovirus which Slayer, Inc. injected into her bloodstream, and if it were released, the tiny wood inside the virus would go straight to her heart. And Jareth, who is now able to stay in the sun, begins to spend more time at the beach, trying to go from pale to super tan.

This is one story that's sure to keep you one your toes. Although fully satisfying, GIRLS THAT GROWL leaves you thirsty for more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun series 13 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Girls That Growl is the third book in the Blood Coven series by Mari Mancusi. It follows Rayne who is both a vampire and a slayer, as she works her latest assignment: figure out where the missing football player has gone, and if the cheerleaders (who have been heard growling) are involved. A goth girl who is normally tormented by the cheerleaders, try out for the squad? Sounds pretty much like Rayne's version of hell.

I love this series for it's Buffy references. This book has obvious ties to episodes The Witch, Phases and Ted, with some slightly more obscure references to other episodes. And all this is ignoring Rayne's opening letter to Joss Whedon. The series isn't very serious or deep, the characters are a little cliched at times, and the plots little silly. But they're really good fun anyway. They make for great light reading for a couple hours. And being a big Buffy fan myself, I like the reminders of great episodes that I love.

5.0 out of 5 stars so awesome 3 May 2013

Review:

I can't say it enough.. I love this series! Another great addition to the series, Girls that Growl is funny, action packed, and of course a whole lot fun with some pretty hot vamps and some kick butt heroines. I just can't get enough.

Long Story Short:

Rayne is now a vampire slaying no powers vamp and she is given a mission, she must become a cheerleader. haha... now that is funny. Something strange is going on with the cheerleaders and boys are disappearing. Rayne is given the task to join the cheerleaders and find out exactly what that is. The mission leads Rayne and Jareth head off to England where they meet with another coven and a wolf pack.

My Thoughts:

Another awesome read. The books just keep getting better. Not only are their vamps and vamp slayers, now we have werewolves. Sounds good to me. The book was written in the same comedic style as the first two and I just think that Mari Mancusi is brilliant. I love the ironies in the story, the funny one -liners, and all the sarcastic characters. These book make me laugh out loud throughout the entire book.

Of course the same awesome characters appear. This book is told from Rayne's point of view and we get into her head a bit more with all her insecurities and fears. She started to have some relationship issues and he also starts to enjoy being a cheerleader and makes a friend. She is a very strange one indeed.

We get to know Jareth a bit better in this book and he is a bit different too. Being about to go out in the sun after some time being a vamp has gone to his head and he is now more of a surfer dude than a brooding vamp. Quite funny actually. Either way he is hot.

There was a serious issue addressed in this book, cutting. I really appreciate the way the author added this in and did it in such a caring way. Sometimes these issues bring the book down and sometimes they add to the story. This time it added and it didn't take over. It was something spoken of and dealt with in a loving manner between friends and it brought out some really good things in Rayne.

The book is a very fast read, exciting, and just way to funny.

In the End:

I think everyone should read this series and have fun with them. They are so spectacular.
