More About the Author

Mari Mancusi always wanted a dragon as a pet. Unfortunately the fire insurance premiums proved a bit too large and her house a bit too small--so she chose to write about them instead. Today she works as an award-winning young adult author and freelance television producer, for which she has won two Emmys.

When not writing about fanciful creatures of myth and legend, Mari enjoys goth clubbing, cosplay, snowboarding, watching cheesy (and scary) horror movies, and her favorite guilty pleasure--playing videogames. A graduate of Boston University, she lives in Austin, Texas with her husband Jacob, daughter Avalon, and their dog Mesquite.

When we first met Rayne McDonald, she was getting ready to become a vampire, only to have those dreams taken away from her when the guy who was supposed to transform her bit her twin sister instead. Then she discovered that her destiny wasn't to become a vampire but to slay the bad ones. So she then joined Slayer, Inc. to fulfill her destiny, only to have one of her missions bite back -- literally. And the vampire who bit her, Maverick, infected her with a virus, and the only way to be saved was for Jareth to change Rayne into a vampire. But now both are infected, and Rayne is on leave since Slayer, Inc. just can't ruin their image by having a vampire as one of their employees.

The good thing is that Rayne and Jareth can stay in the sun. The bad news is, they are pretty much the weakest vampires out there, physically.

Now back in school, Rayne thinks she doesn't have any problems to worry about. That is, until Slayer, Inc. decides to give Rayne another mission.

Turns out that the star football player at Rayne's school, Mike Stevens, is missing, and the cheerleaders are the suspects, since it seems like they aren't just regular cheerleaders, since regular cheerleaders aren't usually werewolves, too. So now Slayer, Inc. wants Rayne to be a little less goth and a bit more preppy, and to try out for the cheerleading squad, which would makes this the worst mission EVER! Of course Rayne can't deny the mission, since she still has the nanovirus which Slayer, Inc. injected into her bloodstream, and if it were released, the tiny wood inside the virus would go straight to her heart. And Jareth, who is now able to stay in the sun, begins to spend more time at the beach, trying to go from pale to super tan.

This is one story that's sure to keep you one your toes. Although fully satisfying, GIRLS THAT GROWL leaves you thirsty for more.

Girls That Growl is the third book in the Blood Coven series by Mari Mancusi. It follows Rayne who is both a vampire and a slayer, as she works her latest assignment: figure out where the missing football player has gone, and if the cheerleaders (who have been heard growling) are involved. A goth girl who is normally tormented by the cheerleaders, try out for the squad? Sounds pretty much like Rayne's version of hell.

I love this series for it's Buffy references. This book has obvious ties to episodes The Witch, Phases and Ted, with some slightly more obscure references to other episodes. And all this is ignoring Rayne's opening letter to Joss Whedon. The series isn't very serious or deep, the characters are a little cliched at times, and the plots little silly. But they're really good fun anyway. They make for great light reading for a couple hours. And being a big Buffy fan myself, I like the reminders of great episodes that I love.

Review:

I can't say it enough.. I love this series! Another great addition to the series, Girls that Growl is funny, action packed, and of course a whole lot fun with some pretty hot vamps and some kick butt heroines. I just can't get enough.

Long Story Short:

Rayne is now a vampire slaying no powers vamp and she is given a mission, she must become a cheerleader. haha... now that is funny. Something strange is going on with the cheerleaders and boys are disappearing. Rayne is given the task to join the cheerleaders and find out exactly what that is. The mission leads Rayne and Jareth head off to England where they meet with another coven and a wolf pack.

My Thoughts:

Another awesome read. The books just keep getting better. Not only are their vamps and vamp slayers, now we have werewolves. Sounds good to me. The book was written in the same comedic style as the first two and I just think that Mari Mancusi is brilliant. I love the ironies in the story, the funny one -liners, and all the sarcastic characters. These book make me laugh out loud throughout the entire book.

Of course the same awesome characters appear. This book is told from Rayne's point of view and we get into her head a bit more with all her insecurities and fears. She started to have some relationship issues and he also starts to enjoy being a cheerleader and makes a friend. She is a very strange one indeed.

We get to know Jareth a bit better in this book and he is a bit different too. Being about to go out in the sun after some time being a vamp has gone to his head and he is now more of a surfer dude than a brooding vamp. Quite funny actually. Either way he is hot.

There was a serious issue addressed in this book, cutting. I really appreciate the way the author added this in and did it in such a caring way. Sometimes these issues bring the book down and sometimes they add to the story. This time it added and it didn't take over. It was something spoken of and dealt with in a loving manner between friends and it brought out some really good things in Rayne.

The book is a very fast read, exciting, and just way to funny.

In the End:

I think everyone should read this series and have fun with them. They are so spectacular.

Here's the next of the books. Book three is called girls that growl it's still by rayne's point of view and her and Jareth have like no vampire powers. Except they can go in the sun. Anyway she's now a vampire vampire slayer. And slayer inc has another job for her , rumors are going around that the cheerleaders are growling and on top of that a local boy is missing so rayne needs to join the team to find out what is going on exactly. She gets on the team by blackmailing the team captain who used to be a best friend. Her first game is on the night of the full moon and after the game ends the cheerleaders all but one that is turn in to a pack of werewolf. They spend the night trashing places in town. On top off that another boy is missing. Rayne traces the cheerleaders steps and figures out were they got bitten and got the virus. So her and jareth make plans to go to of all places England. But after a fight with her mom about her mom;s boyfriend moving in she leaves and crashes the car. Jareth decides rayne is having a hard time with the transformation she's still drinking synthetic blood after a few months of being a vampire. He orders her to stay in the coven and see a shrink while he leaves for England to look for the cure for the cheerleaders. Rayne is mad and pulls the twin switchover and sunny took her place in the coven. She surprised Jareth on the plane and he let her stay and continue on to England. once there rayne pisses off the bitchy England vamps by pulling out her stake. Jareth is angry and he tells her it isn't going to work and when they get back they need to go there separate ways. Sad and feeling alone rayne goes to a bar and ends up wandering off with a boy. That boy is the ware wolf who turned the cheerleaders. he holds rayne captive wanting her to be his werewolf bride. She learns that he has the boys from school captive as well and with no vamp powers she cant help her self or the boys. She use the only thing she an she use her telepathic power to call jareth for help but sadly it only works one way and doesn't no if he heard it or not. But he shows up just in time and saves the day it turns out he had his vamp powers back but he could still go out in the sun. They make up killed the bad wolf and got the cure to the cheerleaders everything was finally going OK till a red head girl shows up announcing that shes magnus's new blood mate to be.
Blood Coven Review 17 Feb. 2011

The 3rd book in The Blood Coven Novel has Rayne who has (YES!!) gotten her wish in becoming a Vampire thanks to her Blood Mate Jareth. Rayne without any choice from Slayer Inc is being and I mean forced to become what would make any normal blood reded teenager happy. (Get it Blood Reded) LOL ..Rayne is given the mission to become wait for it.. wait for it.. (Cheerleader!!) I mean yeah I was friends with them when I was in school but having to dress up in those outfits "uggh" no way no how. Rayne's mission is to become one and figure out why her local high school Cheerleaders like to growl. As in being a teenager and a vampire/ vamp slayer and dealing with her mom's new boyfriend and losing her room and a boyfriend who is for so long had an allergy to sun is now thanks to Rayne getting sick and Jareth coming to the rescue and saving her life and all wants to do is play in the sun and hang ten and not spending quality time with her bad enough rayne is left to figure out what is up with hairy cheerleaders (yeah that was too funny when I read that part. Once Rayne figures out what is going on with her fellow team mates it is up to her and Jareth (well he is her blood mate!) to fix the problem and fast before the hair starts flying. Girls that Growl is just as good and funny as the 1st and 2nd books and Mari Mancusi books are always those LMAO stories and if you are reading by paperback or ebook making sure to take with you everywhere you go and you will notice people will start asking you what you are reading and you will be more then happy to tell them and suggest they start from book 1 and work their way up. Girls that Growl will make you laugh giggle and if you are like Rayne enjoy her smart remarks and also realize woman vamps from overseas can be some real asshats I wanted to pull my stake out too!! (Gotta read this book to know what I mean Yeah it was so funny I was cheering Rayne on and was giving Jareth looks that could kill!!)

Oh this Rayne...I don't think she'll ever stop surprising me: First a vampire slayer, and now a vampire?? A vampire vampire slayer? She's got quite a few titles there, now doesn't she?

Her next assignment as the slayer: figure out why the cheerleading squad has been heard...growling. Very, very strange. What Rayne must do: infiltrate the squad to find out what the heck is going on.....in other words, she has to join the cheerleading team O.O *gasp* I know... Rayne and cheerleading? That's like paring ice cream and needles! But Rayne as a cheerleader....totally hilarious!

Anyway, after Rayne figures out what's wrong with the cheerleaders, she and Jareth fly out to England to retrieve...something that will make the cheerleaders...erm, stop growling. (Just FYI, I'm trying to be good and not put any spoilers! But its so hard!)

Their trip to England was quite crazy, but I think its totally cool that Rayne and Jareth, as vampires, can go out during daylight! (And no, they don't sparkle :P) I was a little sad that Jareth and Rayne got into a fight though...I am totally in love with Jareth! He is just the sweetest thing ever! He and Rayne are so great together!

Overall, I absolutely loved that story! And as I said already, I LOVE this series! I wasn't really a big fan of vampire novels, but I think that is starting to change ;)
