Product Description

CD Description

If one were to go by the charts alone, it would be easy to conclude that red-blooded Rock n Roll, and its kissin cousins R n B and Rockabilly, was solely a male preserve. And to a degree that was the case but as this superb collection reveals, when it comes to cuttin a rug or settin the woods on fire, the girls can easily give the boys a run for their money. Indeed, more than fifty years on, many first generation rockin gals continue to inspire contemporary artists such as Imelda May and VV Brown, whilst others - like Etta James and Wanda Jackson endure under their own steam, winning accolades well into their seventies when most ladies have long since hung up their sequinned mules. Some used Rock n Roll as a springboard for recording careers which were to blossom across the decades and branch in new directions, whilst others quickly faded into obscurity like last night s prom corsage. Many were trail blazers, standing up for themselves against an ever-present backdrop of chauvinism and bigotry. A few broke the mould by penning their own material or by refusing to play second fiddle to their male counterparts. More often than not, digging in their cha cha heels didn t win them any fans with industry bigwigs but no matter, as these discs prove their true worth was in being able to lay down the Big Beat with aplomb. Drawing together some of the finest female singers from across the Roll n Roll spectrum, this 75-track set sees chart-topping R&B mamas rubbing shoulders with boogie woogie country gals, and demure Pop princesses mingling with Rockabilly fillies whose lesser-heard down-home ditties have nonetheless earned them a place in collectors hearts. From sassy city slickers such as Annisteen Allen and LaVern Baker, to Southern songbirds like Sun Records Miller Sisters and the then-fledgling artist/writer Jackie De Shannon, this is as diverse and compelling a set of distaff rockers as one could hope to find

This 3 C.D set are all fantastic gems from the good days of real music, there are
lots of great classic women singers singing pure, pure rock n roll which is a dream to the ears. The sound and clarity of all the discs is just a pleasure to listen to them all,the price is also great for 75 great high quality recordings and I hope this company follows up with more classics like these.

Superb stuff. some of the tracks are preciously rare little gems, like Little Esthers 'I'm a bad, bad, girl' or Annisteen Allens 'G'wan about your business'.Fantastic! You've got snippets of Wanda Jackson ,Little Brenda Lee,Janis Martin and Etta James, plus a great mix of other ladies of song from the formative rock n roll/rockabilly years too.I bought my copy of this three CD set purely on speculation thinking that I might end up with a load of soppy, slushy, 1950s ballads.I was wrong and am so glad with what I actually got. Of course not every single track is to my taste, but the vast majority are. It is,after all,'Girls Gone Rockin'and that's what they do.

Hot Boppin' Girls 13 Aug 2010
By Richard
In the beginning there seemed to be no place in the newly arrived rock'n'roll for girl singers. You had Brenda Lee as the first Hot Boppin' Girl and like so many of them she was rural not urban.
Yet nothing is always that cut and dried. Before Brenda came Bonnie Lou who charted in the U K with Tennessee Wig Walk and in the States with Daddy-O.A pure country star who adapted easily to rhythm'n'blues and can now be seen as the first of this new breed of girl singer and one who paved the way for urban artists like Gale Storm,Cathy Carr and Connie Francis.
It was a time in the early 50s when girl singers were usually from family background (Anita Carter,Kitty Wells,Goldie Hill)and Patsy Cline was seen as a pop singer on account of having charted on Billboard.Since the awakening begun in Germany in the 70s Patsy Cline had been named as a Hot Boppin' Girl for at least 3 songs.
Which is where it gets confusing as my penfriend Ginny Wright cut a number of singles for the Fabor label many of which qualify yet the only Fabor acts known as rockabilly according to the Gospel on Rockin' Country Style-are her former duet partner Tom Tall and the Creel Sisters.
In the 50s next to nothing was known of any of these artists-even Germany's Hot Boppin' Girls series had no sleeve notes-unlike the later reissues on CD which usually includes booklets full of the results of scholarly research.
Photos were hard to come by-just one of Nan Castle who seems to be the perfect woman-a 5 foot and blue eyed blonde Petticoat Girl who can be seen now on one of the Country Style USA DVDs
This label (Bear Family) kicked off with Janis Martin it caused RCA to reissue a double album of tracks never available at the time.
Thus the village became a city by the 80s and the CD Age which followed.
Here on this double CD are many of the biggest guns like Wanda Jackson and Jo Ann Campbell settled next to those who cut just one single in what can now bee seen as what was just an aside from their lives.
Its both the rural and the urban hand in hand-the latter in line of descent from 40s and early 50s band singers.
Its also only the tip of the iceberg-for every Janis Martin there were anything up to 50 others all trying to either clutch for the brass ring of simply cutting a disc for a new experience when America had literally 1000s of studios where you paid a dollar to cut a disc same as Elvis Presley and the later Beatles had done)
The Hot Boppin' Girl though is alive and well and stronger than ever.Checkout Josie Kreutzer or the Flea Bops.Understand that many of these little known girls made comebacks decades later (Laura Lee Perkins).
And maybe read the book Rocket In My Pocket-which places the Hot Boppin' Girl in perspective.
Above all think of this collection as a sampler. There's at least 150 CDs of Hot Boppin' Girls and Pixies-their 60s counterparts-and also entire CDs of many of the girls from June Carter to Leslie Miller.
