About the Author
Helena Pielichaty (pronounced Pierre-li-hatty) is the bestselling author of numerous children’s books, including the highly successful Simone’s Letters, which was nominated for the Carnegie Medal. I made the mistake of reading the first few pages of this book in the classroom whilst my class were getting ready for PE. One small splutter of laughter resulting from page 2, and they all wanted to know what I was reading. Now I have a list of children desperate to read it - even though it's really an easy read for the majority of them!
This is a fantastic book aimed at the majority of girls from 7 to 10 - particularly those who have an interest in football; although anyone with a sense of humour should relate to the key characters.
Megan, the main character,is a lively, inquisitive child who is desperate to join a girls' football team - but there are none in the area. No-one gets chosen for the school team until they are in Year 5 at the bare minimum - and she's still in Year 3 - so what can she do?
The solution is lovely - and the sense of humour reverberates throughout the book, making it appeal to a wide number of children.
A terrific stocking filler - particularly for young tomboys; but I reckon most girls will enjoy this innovative new series.

"Girls FC" is a new series of books aimed at girls who are interested in football. The first book focussed on Megan Fawcett who dreams of being a goalkeeper and how she begins to form a new girls football team. The text is quite large and is arranged in short chapters which keep the reader interested and it would be suitable for children around 7-10.
Although it is quite a simple story, as it is setting up a series I imagine there will be more depth to the characters and storylines as the series progresses. Helena Pielichaty's books will definately appeal to a group of children who have been previously neglected in the reading market. Recommended for football mad girls!

I gave this to my eleven year old daughter to read and she said she really liked it. She wants to read the whole series and thinks that wearing a tiara to football practice is a good thing to do. She liked the story and read it in less than a day. She also thought it would make a good book for the reading scheme at school. So that's pretty comprehensive praise then! Highly recommended by a voracious and discriminating reader.
