2.0 out of 5 stars Friendly but not Wise, 21 Jun 1999
By A Customer
Her writing style has a good flow, and you feel like you're right there with a bunch of understanding moms. But, well, then she starts sounding too all-knowing and unnecessarily funny. Listen folks, what made me really mad (when I really couldn't afford to get any more emotional), was how she manages to nonchalantly state that giving birth at hospitals are the best. Thus, if you were interested in more natural-type birthgiving procedures or Active Birth, the first half of what this book says might sound rather uneducated.

Also, the section about resuming sex was not really assuring for me. I think many women need more time, and more sensitive support than what the book may vaguely suggests.

Overall, as funny and well-meaning as she probably is, I didn't find her sensitive enough when I naturally expected her to be so. A "Girlfriend" alright, but depending on your experience and personality, she may be too overwhelming for you to have around.

Yes, after childbirth and everything you want some affirmations, some practical info, oh lord, you're desperate. My recommendation: Do yourself a favor and read "Laughter and Tears" by Libby Colman.

2.0 out of 5 stars Like her style, but she makes some bad judgements, 21 April 1999
By A Customer
I have to say first that while I enjoy Vicki Iovine's style of writing, she has the ability to tick me off. I picked up this book right after I had my first child and some of the judgemental statements she tends to make are not the thing you need to hear as a new parent.

I think the thing that offended me the most is the line about women who choose to use formula coming from areas where perms are still popular. Excuse me. I used formula for my VERY healthy boy and I do not have a perm and it was MY choice and I don't appreciate such a statement. Especially since Mrs. Iovine told her readers she was not endorsing a specific kind of feeding program. I also did not spend a lot of time whining about my weight or falling apart if my baby cried. I don't think that is a very realistic view.

I read Mrs. Iovine's first book as well, and even though I do like her advice at times, I do wish she would be less judgemental about those who choose to handle things differently. Women should be supportive of other women when it comes to motherhood, not knock them down for choosing to do something different.

5.0 out of 5 stars Laugh in the face of Baby Blues!, 30 Jan 2002
The best advice I can give before you read this book is that if you have a c-section, wait a few days before you start reading! I was in so much pain from laughing at the first page that I had to put it down and wait a couple of days to pick it back up! Problem was, I was so hooked after that page that i kept sneaking peeks - boy did I regret that though because Vicki Iovine is so hilarious and everything she says rings so true that no matter how rotten you feel after giving birth, you will feel your spirits lifting as you laugh your pain away! (my husband thought I was going mad with all the giggling coming from my side of the bed) I just wish she had written a different book for every month of the first year, she is a wonderful girlfriend to have when you are wondering what to do next...

I was so sad when I (reluctantly) finished this book. I am looking forward to my daughter hitting the toddler years so I can read that Guide too.
