girl at her volcano, 11 Jun 2003

first released as an EP vinyl format this album was snapped up by those in the know, and then it became sought after on cassette. numerous attempts to purchase a perhaps american CD have ended in serendipity as i now await a japanese cd import from amazon with a thirst like a recently awoken badger coming out of hibernation. in this album rickie shows such excellent qualities of power and fragility, almost like a female tom waits. many of the tracks were laid down at live concerts, with barely a piano (played by the artist herself) as the accompianment. savour the lush and velvet tones of "hey bub", and the bursting emotion of "my funny valentine", which builds from a tiny squeak into a massive finale at the end of side 1. rainbow sleeves is unmissable on side 2 and the rest of the too short offering is sublimy moulded around the trio above. listen and enjoy, and then go and buy some early tom waits, some nancy griffith, and some alison kraus....enjoy and chill

Rickie Lee Jones at her best, 28 Jan 2010
This review is from: Girl at Her Volcano [VINYL] (Audio CD)
This album was issued only on cassette first time round, and was lost to us after a house break-in. Spent ages searching for a reissued CD, almost buying a 1st issue Japanese import for a huge sum of money, but it finally appeared on UK Amazon at a sensible price, and this was the result.
If you like RLJ, you must have this album. Sometimes happy, sometimes tearjerkingly sad, it is a beatiful, if rather short, production.
I would have bought the whole album just for "My Funny Valentine" which is the most evocative interpretation I have ever heard, but the rest of the tracks are complementary, and the whole is near enough perfect.

Rickie at her very best, 15 Nov 2005
This review is from: Girl at Her Volcano [VINYL] (Audio CD)
The first Rickie Lee Jones I bought was her first album... and it blew me away; haunting lyrics, a unique voice and wonderfully tight and sensitive band. Could things get much better I thought? Well yes, Girl at her Volcano is the step up and I was lucky enough to buy the 10" 33rpm quite by chance. If you like Rickie's cool style then this is a must have.
