I like a little fight in my girls...

Then you re gonna love me!

In 1897, London, sixteen-year-old Finley Jayne is running. She s been viciously attacked by a young lord but that s not the problem. The problem is what made her fight back the darker side urging her to danger, horribly delighted at the prospect of violence... With nowhere left to go, one man comes to her rescue. The richest man in England, an orphaned duke, a misfit like her. Griffin King, and his little company of strays. Fighting against vicious automaton and criminal mastermind The Machinist, Griffin has a use for Finley. But she has to be willing to put her life in his hands. This is her chance to finally be part of something, finally fit in. But as a real life Jekyll and Hyde, the question is, can she control the evil within her?

3.0 out of 5 stars Steampunk Chronicles book 1 26 Nov 2011

3.5 Stars

I've become a big fan of steampunk stories over the last few months so as soon as I heard about The Girl in the Steel Corset I knew I wanted to read it. Seeing the cover only confirmed it - you have to admit that is one beautiful cover! While I did have a few issues with this one it is still a promising debut and I'm looking forward to continuing the series.

To start with the positives I absolutely loved Finley, she is strong and independent and takes an active role in protecting both herself and others. I really liked the Jekyll and Hyde aspect of her personality and the way she gradually starts to bring the two sides of herself together as the story progresses. The world Kady Cross has created is interesting and has been described wonderfully, I was transported to Victorian England while reading but a very different one to what you'll read about in the history books. It's a world full of automatons, organites and other fun technology that I'm looking forward to exploring more. Griff was a likable character but I found him a little too perfect and was frustrated that the romance didn't seem to go anywhere, I do have hopes for future books though. I actually liked Jack much better (but I do have a tendency to go for the bad boys!), I loved his accent and you could hear his cockney drawl as you were reading. I'm hoping we'll see a lot more of him and find out more about his past in the next installment.

There are also some interesting side characters I want to see more of. Emily was a particular favourite and it was nice to see an intelligent woman who was able to out think most of the male characters.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Girl in the Steel Corset 8 Feb 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Finley Janye is not a normal 16 year old girl, when her boss's son tries to take advantage of her; she fights him off and wins. This is because she has a darker side, which is stronger than most men and more daring than most girls in 1897 England. When fleeing the sense, she runs into Griffin King an orphan Duke who has a unique power of his own, he can control Aether. Finley joins the Dukes group of misfits including a girl with an affinity with machines, a boy who is half machine and an American cowboy who is super-fast and has a secret. They have to stop The Machinist, a man who is using robots for some sinister purpose.

The Girl in the Steel Corset is a fascinating Young Adult Steampunk with action, romance, humour and suspense. This book seemed longer than it is, but in a good way as there is a lot information and action in this average sized book.

Finley is an interesting character as you can identify and understand both sides of her, and Cross has cleverly been able to merge both sides of her together and yet see both of them in her. I also really like the rest of the group especially Griffin as he is one of the best YA love interests, however I just could not connect with Jasper but I feel we will get to know him better in the next book.

While I liked the characters, I did not like the romance as I am not a fan of love triangles, and this book has two. I especially did not like the triangle between Emily, Sam and Jasper as it did not really feel needed. Also the copy I read had The Strange Case of Finley Jayne in it and it felt that the events in that story didn't even happen to Finley at all.

I can't wait to see what happens next to Finley, Griffin and the rest of the gang in the next book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Patchwork story 14 Aug 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I had high hopes for this book that fell short within the first few chapters. The initial idea of the Jekyll and Hyde element of the main character, Finley was promising coupled with the steampunk element and I was intrigued to discover what Cross could come up with in relation to other novels of the same genre.

To a point there was potential. Finley was a strong female lead that had the right amount of both vulnerability and strength, while her character counterparts the orphaned duke, Griffin and White Chapel's bad boy Jack made for an interesting love triangle.

I found the author a tad indecisive in the other characters by choosing to give them an array of abilities and backstories whose sole purpose was to fill out the story. Sam was an irritating, ungrateful nuisance for most of the book, with his love interest Emily seemly having unlimited knowledge with the answer to everything despite being only 16 and the allusive Jasper having little to no part in the story progression whatsoever. Not to mention the author felt the need for yet another love triangle between these side characters - do authors these days have any new material for their romance stories? Apparently not.

The plot line itself was predictable for this type of genre, with the criminal mastermind, The Machinist sole purpose is to rise to power with the help of biomechanical automations of his own creation. Been there, already read that. The so called twist was also a disappointment, with the hints too obvious so early on.

The ending, with no noteworthy climax and only a flat cliffy to encourage us to read the next novel, I have to say this is one reader that really can't be bothered. With TGITSC as the foundation, how could this series possible get any better?
