Book Description

8 July 2010
Winning the race is one thing, but can Alex be a winner in love?

Tomboy lawyer Alex Reilly loves nothing better than coming first - except her sexy red Lotus sports car. Preparing for the gruelling Snowy Mountains Car Rally, Alex isn't expecting competition in the form of glamorous model Lyn Stanton. Lyn is everything Alex is not: blonde, gorgeous and girlie - and she's also navigating the race for Keir Thomas, the man who left town and broke Alex's heart eleven years ago. When the three are unexpectedly thrown together, Alex realises she must find a way to trust Keir again to have any chance of crossing the finish line first. Will they be able to confront their troubled past and rediscover not only their shared passion for cars, but each other?

5.0 out of 5 stars Winning is more than coming 1st 6 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback
Janet Gover's tender and insightful 3rd novel, set in Australia, is the story of former lovers, the tomboy Alex and Keir, who are thrown together by circumstances to race in the Snowy Mountains Car Rally. It's a story of friendship as much as about falling in love and about facing up to mistakes made in the past. Alex has to face her demons and accept what she can and can't change.

I loved the way the friendship developed between Alex and Lyn, and the flashbacks to Alex's and Keir's former life are drip-fed skilfully into the story making to you turn the pages right till the end, just like the racing action does.

Janet Gover shows us why winning is more than getting 1st place!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ladies, rev your engines! 19 Nov 2012

Australian author Janet Gover has written three books for the little black dress imprint. I'm hoping to read more from her in the future because I just lover her books! In fact, this book is a 4.5/5 for me.

Girl Racers is about two girls who end up forming a race team due to the unforeseen circumstances of a car crash and pregnancy. Alex Reilly is a lawyer, and a bit of a loner, who's had her heart broken. She's driving her dream car a red Lotus in her first race, when she discovers the man who broke her heart Keir Thomas will also be participating in the race. It's been twelve years since they've seen each other.

Lyn Stanton is a model. She's an unlikely participant in a car race, but she has her reasons. When she finds she may have to drop out of the race, she teams up with Alex. Lyn is not only beautiful, but she has brains, will she be able to fulfill her goals and maybe meet someone in the process who really sees her?

This book is fast paced and action packed. From the flashbacks from both Keir and Alex's viewpoints, to the five day race, the story flowed well and I was hooked form the first page, something Janet Gover has done in all her books. I like how so many topics were part of this book, like Angelman Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder, or the differences between social classes, to the prejudices faced by women in a male dominated event/hobby, and the list can go on. If you ever get the chance to read something by Janet Gover, jump at it. You won't regret it at all!
