Not since V.C. Andrews' Flowers in the Attic has there been a family saga so dark and disturbing. Author Roxane Tepfer Sanford has captured readers from around the world with her best selling Gothic novel The Girl in the Lighthouse.

Arrington, book 1
From the time Lillian Arrington was born, she lived an isolated life on a remote lighthouse station with her father Garrett and her young mother Amelia. But Lillian has wishes and dreams far beyond her years.
When her father is transferred to a new station, Lillian is anxious to meet the assistant keepers and their two sons, Heath and Ayden. She had never met children her own age, had playmates, or made a friend.

Heath, the handsome teenage boy who desires to become a doctor someday, welcomes Lillian. However, his younger brother, Ayden, doesn't like her and she struggles to win him over. Before long, a secret bond between the three is forged and to Lillian's delight, they become close friends.

After so many years, Lillian's childhood is beginning to resemble that of a normal girl. No longer is she lonely and isolated from the rest of the world by over-protective parents. Instead, she experiences new adventures, attends school, and falls in love for the first time.

However, her glorious days on Jasper Island are short-lived as her beautiful young mother begins a tragic descent into insanity and passes away. Lillian is left in the care of her sinister grandmother Eugenia Arrington, who, since the end of the Civil War, continues to steadfastly hold onto the once glorious Georgia plantation known as Sutton Hall. It is there that the immoral secrets of Lillian's parents are revealed, and she is left to pick up the pieces of her scandalous past, and somehow, find her long way home.

1.0 out of 5 stars Started out okay but... 5 Oct 2011

Can't understand all those great reviews that prompted me to download the book. First half was fairly interesting, especially since I love the sea and am fascinated with lighthouses. Writing was somewhat amateurish but since it was being told from a child's point of view I thought that might explain it. The second half of the book was so bad that I ended up rapidly skimming through it, hoping it would pick up somewhere further along since I had already invested the time to read the first half of the book. Second half was full of idiotic, stereotypical characters, corny language, silly romantic drivel, hokey situations...I found myself rolling my eyes more often than not. This evidently is a series, but I will definitely NOT be buying the second book!

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of time! 15 Oct 2011
By H. Bright - Published on Amazon.com

There is so much wrong with this book I hardly know where to start. It had a few interesting threads but they led nowhere. It was like the author was sitting there thinking up stuff (ooooo wouldn't it be neat if this was there! or that was there!) to throw at the reader then had no clue what to do with it once it was started....just dropped the ideas/characters with no resolutions or disclosures. Totally age inappropriate "feelings"; would've been more believable if the girl had started out at 14 instead of 9, but then she couldn't have endured years of torture and emerged still only 16. I have no idea what book one person read who hails this book (father rapes daughter) for "younger" readers, but it can't have been this one. Repetitive, disjointed, unfinished, abrupt, unbelievable. A load of hooey and I sincerely wish I had never read it. How did this get published?

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful 18 Oct 2011
By TriniRed - Published on Amazon.com

Despite the poor writing, this book kept my attention for the first two chapters. However, the first glaring problem was the inappropriate sexual musings of the narrator - who happened to be a nine year old girl. Add to that the stilted dialog, the plot lines that were developed only to abruptly go nowhere, and the generally violent and perverted central events and this becomes a book that I will be deleting. Fans of V.C. Andrews may find something to appeal. For the rest of us, this is a painful waste of time that leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
