I was lucky enough to read this as a preview copy..... I have read nearly all of Bernards other books, and I am a huge fan.... but he said this one was different.... Hmmm... I approached it with some trepidation as I think I know what to expect from him in the style of his books.. so he says it is different.. OK... Jump in.
I LOVED it.... no other words.... Yes it was different for him, and I think he has grown amazingly as a writer. This book was poignant, memorable and thought provoking. The style of writing has changed so much since the first book of his I read.... the opening pages are written with such beauty and poise.. I read them over and over, and they dragged me into the story with a smile on my face.
What is it about then.... well .. life.... and hopes and dreams and desires... and "reality". That simple... yet woven so beautifully among the pages. It has some snigger out loud moments.. and some WOAH! moments.... and some tearjerkers too.... it has everything.. I really cannot recommend it enough!
There is a paragraph at the very beginning, that sticks with you the more you read.. and the more you question....... and at the end....
This book has had an effect on me..... I now need to read Hemmingway.. something that has never really concerned me before..... it has also made me wish I was Beautiful... and Spanish.. and I worked in a bar.... I have long admired this author for his books..... now, after reading this, and the way it is written..... I think I am a little bit in love with him as a person too!

I waited with great anticipation the arrival of Bernard's new book and was more than delighted to have been given the opportunity to read and review a preview copy. Already forewarned that this latest publication was going to be "different" , I was intrigued an d settled down to read. I must confess to being a huge fan of Bernard's work and his style of writing is just my "cup of tea". This one most certainly doesn't disappoint. One word "WOW"!! This was written from the heart. a masterpiece. You, the reader, enters a world of love, romance, evil, hatred, to name but 4. It is not a love story, it is life, sometimes in its crudest form. It touched a part of my past life I have to admit. I highly recommend it, a masterpiece of the pen. The Girl from Tenerife entered my heart and long may it stay there. Did I mention the ending? No? Well i wont, all I can say is please read it , you will not be disappointed. It's a shame you can only award 5 stars, this merits much more.

I had the fortune of reading an advanced copy of this novel, and it is my favourite Schaffer book yet. The product description, and the subsequent glowing reviews the novel has garnered upon release tell you enough about the story. I don't want to spoil it and ruin the experience of reading something so fine. A work of honest-to-god literature that leaves you feeling moved and satisfied come the conclusion.
I believe The Girl From Tenerife can stand side by side with The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, written by one of my favourite authors, Michael Chabon. It's that good.
In my email to Schaffer, in which I gave him my feedback on the book, I noted the following:

"I feel like the beating heart of the Rocky films is all over this. I feel like before, you were hitting with muscle. But Rocky never won with muscle. He won with heart. The Girl From Tenerife is a big ole love letter to writing and falling in love and doing the right thing and falling on your rear end and facing up to the ugliness of the world."

This novel is something special. It's a work of literature. And it is, surely, THE must read book of this summer.

Well, this was something entirely new from Mr Schaffer. Quite different. Quite superb. I read this book in under 9 hours. And yes, I had tired, watery eyes when I came to the last page, but that's because I was simply unable to put it down. I haven't said that about a book in a long time.

Like the reviews here so far, I too think this is the author's best work to date and, if I could, I'd give it way over 5 stars.
