2.0 out of 5 stars JUST A MANICURE 19 May 2013
By Michael
Format:DVD
Jeff Sutton (Richard Wyler)shows up in Rio with a suitcase with 10 million stolen dollars. The money is wanted by both a crime boss (George Sanders) and by Sumitra (Shirley Eaton)who is building a female army by kidnapping wealthy people and taking this money. These are your typical female army with exposed legs and a woman's usual 24 inch waist.

In one scene Jeff brings a gun to a knife fight, but then uses his fist. The film also has prisoners in glass cages, women being tortured, brief girl/girl action, and the worse soundtrack I have heard in a long time. There was a background buzz for much of the film, plus the music was horrible with terrible lyrics. The pink phone with the long extension cord that can be dragged through a swimming pool was funny. The film has a fair amount of camp value. Also known as "Rio 70" and "Future Women."

Parental Guide: No f-bombs. Sex, nudity (Maria Rohm, Beni Cardoso)

3.0 out of 5 stars Carry On Prisoner 19 Feb 2013
By Zaroff
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
The opening sequence is delirious, a red hued femme cavorting in dry-ice. Imagine Barbarella shot by, well, Jess Franco. Then we get the obligatory establishing local-colour shot, which pans across what could be Rio. So far, so sixties. The music is immediate, sensationalizing bossa-novas. Picture quality is generally as good as this could get, sometimes being less than the colourful opening. Yet the kitsch & minimalist gal's costumes all speak Franco..

The lead femme is haughty but photogenic, you may recall she was the gal covered in gold in Goldfinger. George Sanders, on his last legs, is as ever a delight, if only given a script with hardly a normal sentence to render. Many gals, occasional flashes of breastage, a plot that emulates and at the same time mocks spy films, in a comic book fashion...yet the film has lag. Lots of lag, more than jet lag. There is not sufficient plot for 90 minutes and coupled with a less than thespian quality of the 'leading man', who seems so tanned as to be varnished stiff, and the whole seems a lot longer than an hour and a half.

With the need for speed and the constant drive for comedic throw-away lines, it all does comes across as a slightly surreal comment on action films, what with guns that may be toys, people being tortured with devices that are as frightening as a budgie in a bag. The feel is almost camp Carry On film, the look almost shades of The Prisoner. A surreal romp that doesn't quite deliver punch or dramatic force, but does stand out as a relic of the late sixties and of Franco's just warming up his zoom lens. The extras, a documentary is up to date and most insightful on what Franco saw and what some actors thought they were doing. Which is rarely the same bag when we watch a minor Franco flick. Enjoyable, but slow, like an elephant eating a bun a long way off.

4.0 out of 5 stars A real curiosity ! 1 Feb 2004
By nussbaum22 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
The plot of "The girl from Rio" is quite simple: Sumuru and her army of women want to exterminate the whole human male gender. Actions scenes are not the best moments of this movie. The interest is somewhere else. It's much more its weird and wild atmosphere, which will enjoy the Franco aficionados. It's difficult not to be fascinated by the world of Femina City, the lair of the female warriors. Shirley Eaton and Maria Rohm are simply amazing in all her sexy suits and there is also a wonderful song called of course "The girl from Rio". The final scene on the ship is a typical example for Franco's touch!
The quality of this DVD is in a good shape. As Bonus we have some interviews of Jess Franco, Harry Alan Towers and the very natural Shirley Eaton. A lot of posters and stills complete this DVD with of course a Jess Franco bio and some facts of Sumuru.
"The girl from Rio" is a real curiosity and I'm sure Franco friends will enjoy it. Blue Underground did again a fine job.

3.0 out of 5 stars For Shirley Eaton fans only! 23 Dec 2010
By Mike from Canada - Published on Amazon.com

The Girl from Rio title suggests maybe an unearthed musical from the 1940's but naw, wrong guess. It is in fact the sequel to The Million Eyes of Su-Muru which also starred Shirley Eaton in the title role of Su-Muru or here as Sumitra the leader of a modern day army of women warriors bent on global domination. Picture an amalgam of Modesty Blaise & Secret Agent & you should start to clue in as to what this is. Richard Wyler is the man trying to crash Sumitra's party though it's a while before we know why. George Sanders on the DVD case is referred to as a crime boss though the movie shows him as essentially the Brazil based head of the British Secret Service ( if I got this right) though he seems more cash then mission driven. if you like people being chased captured, escaping being chased again captured & escaping this is your kind of film. Maria Rohm as well is featured & I believe apperared in Jess Franco's next film 99 Women. For me movie aside the special feature interviews with Shirley Eaton ( very brief) & Jess Franco ( more extended) were very interesting. I won't spoil it for you but suffice it to say that while shirley & Jess spoke well of each other, it appears neither the actor or the director were very happy with the finished product. In fact I believe Shirley Eaton went into semi retirement shortly after this movie & Jess inserted a double for Shirley in a provocative scene & didn't reveal it to her. If you're a big Shirley Eaton Fan watch it or into cult film, same thing applies. It is watchable but stretched out to far in some spots. As well it is the type of a film that tried to be kinky & sexy as well as a mainsteam spy flick & really wasn't either. 3 stars is as high as I can go based on the solid acting & sultry appeal of Shirley Eaton & Maria Rohm.
