Book Description

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder - and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family.

He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, truculent computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. When the pair link Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves.

Review

'Intelligent, complex, with a gripping plot and deeply intriguing characters. The author's early death is a great loss' Philip Pullman.

'What a cracking novel! I haven't read such a stunning thriller debut for years. Brilliantly written and totally gripping' Minette Walters.

'I doubt you will read a better book this year' Val McDermid.

About the Author

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant plot but too much detail! 28 Jan. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I was bought this as a Christmas gift and was eager to start reading straight away due to the hype over the millenium trillogy. I started reading it and I have to say the first few chapters were a real struggle to get through, however after that in my opinion the book does not fail to disappoint!

I am very glad I decided to stick with it as it soon became very interesting after the first few chapters. The book flits back and too between two charachters until they both meet and therefore encouraged me to read chapter after chapter as the suspense was brilliant.

I do have one little gripe, I feel the author put way to much detail into things and it was very unnecessary at times. Although at times it could be very off putting if you'd rather the author get to the point it is still a brilliantly executed book with a brilliant plot.

Overall I have rated it 4 stars due to slow starts and too much unwanted detail however I would recommend anyone on the fence to download it and stick with it as it does not disappoint.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but wasted some of its potential 25 Mar. 2015
By Jay
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really struggled when deciding if I should give this 3 or 4 stars, I settled on 3. I watched the film adaptation first and honestly I think this is one of the very rare exceptions were the film was better. The main story is the same, and it is a very intriguing murder mystery. However the side stories are unnecessary, for a large part they evolve around rape. They are unnecessary to the story and seem to be put in for the sake of being controversial, to give the book attention. Finally once the murder mystery is wrapped up there is still 50+ pages to go, all of which is wasted on another pointless and rather dull story, which did not need to be told. The love story is also weak and could have been left out, again it added nothing to the story.
If this book was just about the murder mystery and the other things were left out, then it would be 4 stars. But as it is, I can only give it 3 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strongest novel I've read since The Wasp Factory 5 July 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is the best book I've read in quite some time, and the strongest horror/thriller novel I've read since The Wasp Factory, a decade or so ago.

That said, I almost gave up on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It's certainly a slow-starter, and Larsson's detailed descriptive style was heavy-going until the story sucked me in. But once I was hooked, this became one of those rare books that I just couldn't keep away from, and would read at every given opportunity.

I understand that the original Swedish title was "Men Who Hate Women", which I actually think fits the book more comfortably, and provides a slightly different prism through which to understand Blomkvist's personal life.

There are some deeply uncomfortable moments of violent rape described quite graphically, which I mention only really as a content warning. Otherwise, I'd (obviously!) recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slow starter but worth the persistence. 21 Jan. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Having heard so much about this book I was almost reluctant to read it as with previous books that have got so much coverage I almost always finish them with a somewhat disappointed opinion,The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was an enjoyable exception. The first 100 pages were quite slow going I think this was mainly getting my head around all the Swedish names! However it's when we get to meet Lisbeth Salander that the book really takes off,I found her character so refreshing and appealing that I just kept wanting to find out more about this girl. This is my first review so I won't go blathering on but if you are thinking of purchasing this great title then go for it you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not my usual cup of tea, but I loved it 26 May 2012

When I first heard of this Stieg Larsson series I resisted at first. I'm more a fan of sci-fi and fantasy, and this didn't seem something I would enjoy, even though it did pique my interest. Before too much longer I caught the movie on Lovefilm, and since then I was hooked and had to buy the books. Its dark, gritty and it sucked me in instantly. I was enthralled and impressed by the storyline, which follows the story of asocial but brilliantly talented and enigmatic Lisbeth Salander. She and a disgraced journalist Mikael Blomqvist investigate a seemingly unsolvable old murder case. I won't go into too much detail, but I believe you will enjoy this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable 16 Mar. 2012
By Mrs CFC
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
There is a lot of hype surrounding this book so I approached it with quite high expectations. The story is complex and fascinating and somewhat different from other books of the genre I have read. I quickly got hooked into the book, identified with the very strong and quite quirky main characters and was swept along with them on their adventure. There were times when it got bogged down in pages and pages of somewhat boring and unnecessary detail hence only four stars. If it was a bit more succinct it would be a real rip roaring read.
Overall it was enjoyable and I am looking forward to reading the other books in the series.

I started reading this book after watching the American film adaptation. I enjoyed that film very much and decided to start reading it. While I agree that it started slowly and there seemed to be often too much description of some things. However once the two main characters meet and begin working together then the real story starts. I was fascinated with Lisbeth I think she is an incredible character. The discription of some of the murders and violence against women were quite shocking. As soon as the book really started going I couldn't put it down and read it in about two days. A book that is well worth reading.
