Synopsis
Mansfield's first starring role is as the outrageously voluptuous but tone-deaf girlfriend of a retired racketeer. He hires a talent agent to transform her into a movie star and they fall in love. High-voltage, candy-coloured camp, by comic expert Frank Tashlin, which features some great early rock 'n' roll performances from The Platters, Little Richard, and Fats Domino.

5.0 out of 5 stars Virtually a live-action cartoon - and all the funnier for it!, 10 Oct 2006
By Trevor Willsmer (London, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
The Girl Can't Help It is like a live-action Tex Avery cartoon - Jayne Mansfield even looks like Swingshift Cinderella herself, while Edmond O'Brien channels both Yosemite Sam and Elmer Fudd at times - although it's directed by another animator, Frank Tashlin, whose pen-and-ink work never quite dared to go this far. Smut is present in every scene, whether it be Mansfield holding two jugs of milk, or the outrageous milkman sight gag you cannot believe they got past the censors. The plot is a reworking of Born Yesterday but much, much funnier and a lot more likeable, with a mostly well-integrated array of rock'n'roll hits of the day from an impressive line-up of everyone from Gene Vincent to Fats Domino via Abby Lincoln and Eddie Cochrane, not to mention the mandatory Chuck Berry. Yet for all the energy, perhaps the single most effective musical moment is Tom Ewell seeing old flame Julie London everywhere he turns when he hears Cry Me a River. The color is stunning in this 2.55:1 widescreen transfer, a big surprise for the usually lackluster DeLuxe color system. Perfectly joyous, and without an ounce of padding. Damn, it's catching!

Where the US DVD includes a historical audio commentary, documentary on Mansfield and trailers, Second sight's UK DVD includes an interview with kitsch director John Waters on the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars A figure made to squeeze!, 4 Nov 2004
By G. Cann "graham" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The most important and best Rock'N'Roll film of the 1950's. This film stands way above the rest in that it was obviously made with an above average budget and is in colour - and what a cast!
Gene Vincent, Little Richard, Fats Domino,The Treniers, Eddie Fontaine and the 3 Chuckles, (Uh?), never heard of em? me neither. This film also stars a young Eddie Cochran singing 20 Flight Rock. Eddie was cast as an Elvis impersonator specifically for the film and although he had cut records before, this was the platform to the big time. It is nearly 20 years since I last saw this film on the BBC in the early 80's. Was it worth the wait? You betcha!

4.0 out of 5 stars Review of 'The Girl Can't Help It', 28 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Light comedy/ Rock'n'Roll Classic Movie featuring Tom Ewell ( of 'Seven Year Itch' fame )
as bungling musical agent /P.R man , and Jayne Mansfield as aspiring no-hoper with a voice like a cat in pain . This movie has some great performances by some of the leading rock'n'rollers of the time and remains one of the timeless movie-classics of the era.

I saw this film in 1957 and more recently on TV. It still entertains thanks to the cast and the musical performances, particularly Eddie Cochran singing 'Twenty Flight Rock. Read more
