Product Description

1981. School is shit, your hero just killed himself and your girlfriend's pregnant.

Tony is 15 and he's in trouble. It's not that he secretly reads James Joyce and his schoolmates would kill him if they found out what a freak he was. It's not that he's trying to write his story and can't find the right voice. It's that his girlfriend, Janine, is pregnant, and in a couple of months everyone will know and his life will be over. So he's decided to end it himself.

Set in 1981, in the aftershock of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis's suicide, The Girl with the Bomb Inside is a 16,000-word novelette that explodes with all the filth and fury of a three-minute punk song, hammering at the bars of its teenage prison with a foul-mouthed and brutal depiction of a schoolyard pregnancy.

This Kindle edition also features a free sample chapter from Andy Conway's next novel, postmodern Hungarian campus romance, Train Can't Bring Me Home.

5.0 out of 5 stars A captivating read 24 Mar 2011
By DomCar
Format:Kindle Edition
I only put this down because it was 2am and I needed to sleep. If I had started the novelette earlier in the day I would have read it all in one sitting.

It's a brilliant read, well written, excellently paced, true to life and extremely observational. It took me straight back to my school days, reminded me of how stupidly obsessed I was with how my school mates perceived me, and my pathetic, exploratory fumblings with the opposite sex. It cleverly highlights the terror of being a teenage boy, wandering blindly through a world you clearly knew nothing about, pretending all the time that you did. Andy Conway expertly captures the insecurities and embarrassment of youth and takes you on a journey that will stay with you long after you have finished reading.

However, I'm not entirely sure I swore that much as a teenager.

That aside the read was a genuine joy.

I can't wait to read his next.

Not normally my sort of thing, but The Girl With The Bomb Inside is delivered in such a punchy, gritty style it's hard to set aside. This is the first thing I've downloaded for Kindle - I read it on my iPhone and the pace and chapter length works perfectly for a mobile device. Conway's crisp, staccato prose delivers the chapters in suitably bite-sized chunks, but the real skill is the way he weaves those chunks into a satisfying whole. The story paints a bleak, emotionally biting picture of a teenage outsider facing his worst nightmare. A story of hidden rage and lost potential, it's got a suitable kick in the tail. A steal at the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not my usual reading - but v enjoyable... 14 April 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
As said not my usual reading - but found it very enjoyable.
Overall a very good read - Loved the writing style, thought the different starts etc v clever, the twist was great - the only downside for me was the language - not necessarily the swearing, but more the use of some of the more derogatory words - although I do accept these were more commonly used during the 80's. However saying that I would definately still recommend the novelette to others and it would not put me off reading others by this author.
