A houseguest left me this book some time ago and having nothing better to read I thought I'd tackle it, although I knew nothing about the genre. Well, if I'd known more I might have been inclined to send it to a car boot sale without opening it: it was bloody from start to finish - sick-making and horrid, but the plot is nevertheless coherent and I did manage to finish it despite the nauseating descriptions of ritualistic butchery. I have now discovered that it is out of print and considered "collectible" so will be putting it up for sale after the holiday. If you're a fan I'm sure you'll love it.

One the most culture rich books ever written, Olden shines.

For those who have a love for the Eastern culture, this is a masterpiece. The characters are very well thought out and have histories that could be stories of their own. It is a love story and tragedy in the mix of a great Martial Arts detective mystery. Everything is there. Lost loves, bitter enemies, old secrets, betrayal, and honor. This work has it all. The main character is not the usual perfect specimen. In fact, the characters all have their flaws and they are used as character hooks without beating you upside the head with them. The book is not for the Hollywood Ending fanatics. It has a great ending, but nothing you could expect until it happens. If you love the Martial Arts, Eastern culture, a good mystery, or just a great story....read Giri.

If you like cops and robbers, thrillers, sex, martial arts, then this book is for you. The characters are great and the story is immersive. It's a real page turner. I wish Olden had more books like this, or even a sequal to this one! Excellent read. It's a little dated now, but you'll have no problem with the time period.
