3.0 out of 5 stars There are much better books out there 2 Mar 2010
This book gathers together in one volume several of Giovanni Civardi's guides to drawing. It contains Drawing Hands and Feet, The Clothed Figure, Drawing Portraits, Drawing Scenery, Drawing Techniques and Drawing Light and Shade. It covers a lot of topics but not well or in depth and as an experienced artist I found it unsatisfactory. It has a lot of drawings but is short on text. The artist shows you many of his works but doesn't tell you much about how he achieved the results he got. Lacking much text means it is doesn't offer much advice. Consequently, I wouldn't recommend this book to a beginner. If you must have this book, then buy the latest edition which includes The Nude. It is far cheaper than buying his drawing guides individually. Just don't pay full price. However, my advice is to look elsewhere. There are plenty of other books that will give you far more. For landscape drawing I strongly recommend Pencil Magic by Phil Metzger. For fantastic value go for the following volume published by North Light Books. which contains 4 useful books. You'll find it on Amazon under "Big Book of Drawing: Sketching and Drawing, Draw Real Animals, Secrets to Drawing Realistic Faces, Fast Sketching Techniques (Hardcover)by Cathy Johnson (Author)" Just check the prices of the individual books it contains and you'll see what I mean.

4.0 out of 5 stars Giovanni Civardi's Complete Guide to Drawing 21 April 2008
I like this book and the authors style, the words are kept to a minimum with loads of interesting examples. Giovanni Civardis a really talented artist and provides plenty of inspiration but one of my favourite things about this book is the beautiful loose but accurate style he has and demonstrates, this is refreshing as a lot of art teaching books are based on the American obsession with photo realism- keep it loose and lively in that Italian way! I felt 4 stars only though, as maybe there could be a few more tips, but this is a great book and definitely touches the artist within. Its a weighty volume and even though paperback its good quality, you could even use it as a coffee table book. I can smell the pasta cooking while I sketch in the vineyard!

5.0 out of 5 stars Over The Moon 16 Nov 2009
I didn't really know what to expect from this book, a lot of the 'guides' to drawing are limited and basic at best but I was pleasantly surprised. I was over the moon when I flicked through it, not only is it informative and clear in its approach but it is also full of beautiful and inspirational drawings. It seems a lot easier to follow and is more interesting than the average 'guide to drawing'. After seeing the book I had to wonder why it was not more expensive, definately a bargain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Pencil, Charcoal and Ink Reference! 18 Nov 2007
By Salome - Published on
This book is a nice consolidation of Civardi's previous drawing instructionals published in the Art of Drawing series under separate topics: portraits, clothed figures, hands and feet, scenery, light & shade. If you purchase this book you'll basically have them all under one cover. Subjects are rendered with realism and this book is packed with illustrations. Civardi's gives advice on art materials, drawing techniques for pencil, charcoal and ink, photos & references, simplifying subjects, anatomy and basic tips sketch artists use to accomplish realism. Text is brief but succinct. This book makes a wonderful addition to any artist's reference library on drawing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and highly recommended 16 Sep 2009

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
If I were to recommend a single reference for realistic drawing, this would be the one. Why buy the individual chapters as separate books when you can buy them all in one package? Civardi has combined six of his stand-alone books into a comprehensive reference, as did Blake with his complete painting course The Complete Painting Course: A Guide to Techniques in Oils, Watercolors and Acrylics. About the only thing missing are his figure drawing books Drawing The Female Nude, although he includes a few fine figure drawings in his portraits chapter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mastering Drawing Skills 8 Dec 2011
By Sydney Scribe - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Giovanni Civardi's knowledge and outstanding drawing skills make this a book that should be at the elbow of all that pick up a pencil, pen, crayon, charcoal or anything else, to make marks that really mean something. His skill and instruction takes the student and the more experienced along the path to mastery. Line, form, shape, tone and texture, etc are all developed throughout the book with a great quality of presentation and learning sequence. This is no ordinary book but a genuine "tour de force" which will have a reader/student acquiring skills for a lifetime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Complete Guide For Aspiring Artists 15 July 2010
By jb27809 - Published on
I've looked at many drawing books, including anatomical drawing books and this is still one of the best. It goes through many areas of drawing from portraits and full figures to landscapes, even materials and methods you can use. I started drawing by following this book's instructions with no previous experience at all and now attend the Art Student's League in NYC. Because of this book, I was able to start my life drawing class at an intermediate level and work on refining my skills from there. I still reference it all the time. I've only been drawing for 6 months but feel that I can become a great artist thanks to the great foundation this book gave me.
