4.0 out of 5 stars Static untrue history! 14 Sep 2011
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this DVD to add to my collection because of the bargain price and because it is always nice to see a production away from the mainstream of Operas that so often these days have lost all credibility due to over ego's of crazy directors who are only interested in their own wildly abstact ideas. Going back in time some twenty years you can usually get an accurate production of a work that has stood the test of time. By and large I was not too dissapointed with this Opera. Verdis early music so often criticised for being bawdy and hackwork has faded with time and , at least you can hear some lovely melodies that are recognisable. This opera is full of them both in arias and ensemble numbers that are so delightful. The story is a poor representation of the Joan of Arc story and completely untrue but serves as a good vehicle for the main characters who could really be called anything you like. Indeed, You could adopt the story to any thing you like. Just moving into the later abstract period of theatre design around the 90's this production is a bit of a mish mash. The use of what appeared to be old Michelin tyres as armour quite amused me along with the dunces caps! beautifully sung by all the leading characters and the chorus work as well but nevertheless extremely static. Characters walk on stage ,sing, and then walk off again in a very disjointed fashion. The only one with any acting ability was Bruson who seemed to struggle with his miserable, lifeless part to the point that he seemed to be overacting alongside the other dummies or is that just me being a bit too harshly negative. Even so I did enjoy it musically and as there is nothing else to compare it alongside it is a good addition to my collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars Giovanna D'Arco 30 Dec 2012

Not too bad, but the tenor made no impression. Susan Dunn and Renato Bruson were as good as they always are.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good singing 12 April 2006
By figaro - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
This opera doesn't have a lot of action but it does have great tunes - one after another, and this makes a nice audio recording to listen to over and over. Susan Dunn is an exceptional soprano with a beautiful, powerful, flexible voice - what more could one ask for? Vincenzo La Scola is a good silvery-toned tenor with reliable high notes. Bruson's singing is touching as always. Dunn and La Scola are more of your 'stand and deliver'-type singers - not great actors, so with the lack of action in the opera, I do not give the video a full five stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good performance of a rarely heard opera 9 Mar 2006

Although Giovanna d'arco is not one of Verdi's best operas, it is very enjoyable, especially for opera lovers who want to go beyond the standard operas we hear all the time. This was very well performed and recorded. My only real complaint is that it did not have a synopsis of the opera. For a little known opera such as this, a synopsis would be very helpful for following the story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vivid if Germanic 'Giovanna d'Arco' from Bologna. 23 Jun 2005
By Gerard Fagan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:VHS Tape
The Teatro Communale presents a well sung 'Giovanna d'Arco' ably conducted by Riccardo Chailly. Susan Dunn sings sytringly in the title part ably seconded by Vincenzo La Scola who sings mellifluously as Carlo. Renato Bruson as Giacomo Giovanna's father easily carries home the gold medal for his singing and acting. Herzog's production is very germanic in style so that scenically the opera seems more wagnerian than verdian. Please can this production be issued on DVD a.s.a.p.
