There are at least two versions of MH-658. In one of the versions the anti-slip material on the sliding plate is cork, on the other one its black “rubber”. The one I’ve received as the black “rubber” anti-slip which looks and feels similar to the material used by most camera plate manufacturers (perhaps a bit stiffer than most).

It also appears there are several options regarding how to attach the quick release adapter to the tripod/monopod/head. The quick release adapter has a 3/8” thread and mine came with a removable 3/8” screw for mounting on threaded heads (most of Giottos heads are threaded). From some reviews I’ve read I think there is also a version sold with a 1/4” to 3/8” thread adapter.

The kit looks well manufactured and the package includes a useful Allen key.

The video pin on the camera plate is spring loaded but I’ve preferred to remove it for use with a photo camera. The removal of the pin is very easy to accomplish using a small Philips drive.

The camera plate comes with two screws: 1/4” and 3/8”. It’s very easy to remove the one you don’t need by the use of a revolving safety ring (no tools needed). The quick release adapter includes threads to store the spare screw but the screw head doesn’t seat flush with the adapter base so there are some tripod/monopod heads with larger bases where it’s impossible to store the spare screw like this (not a big problem but a small design oversight).

The reversible flanged edges on the sliding plate are made of plastic that does not look very good but they feel soft so perhaps the designers have chosen this kind of material to avoid scratching camera bodies. Anyway they do their job without flaw.

Included in the quick release adapter is an automatic safety lock mechanism.

This was the closest product to work with the Capture Camera Pro clip I bought. TBH I don't understand why Peak Design research dept. can't come up with a design to with the Giottos, but at the moment they don't. If there was one criticism of this adapter plate, it does not wind out far enough for the plate but this is no fault of Giottos, just an observation for anyone trying to do the same thing as I am doing.

I bought this sliding quick release to use with my recently purchased 'L' Bracket. Its abit of a fidle having to slide the plat on to the mount, but it seems to work ok.

Functions exactly as expected 20 Nov 2013

I have Giottos quick release plates installed on all of my tripod mountable gear and the corresponding quick release adapters on my tripod heads, and I have been quite happy with them. They're more cost effective than a lot of the pricier Arca Swiss style adapters, but still quite functional and well made. The tabs to keep the camera from rotating on the plates are only plastic, but have been successful in keeping my camera body from rotating on the plate when shooting portrait. The quick release adapters function exactly as expected.

bad after a short time 17 Feb 2013
By Russ Flynn - Published on Amazon.com
I bought this TYPE of Giottos 'Arca Swiss' mount thinking that it would keep working perfectly for many years. (it's important to note that while I did not buy THIS unit, the one I did buy is the EXACT SAME TYPE Giottos puts on ALL the units they sell) However, after only a few short months of light tripod use (all I use it for), I have found that the screw clamp is not as easy to turn down tight as it was in the beginning (even after trying wet & dry lubes). It still holds the slidding camera plate snug, but it takes some REAL EFFORT to do so. No way I could do it with wet hands, and this mans fingers are quite strong!
The rest of the unit is still fine, but the screw is the only thing holding it tight in the tripod head, therefor I would say the most important part is the bad part.
With all the money I have counting on this set up holding tight, I now find myself looking for something that will last. I like the design, but I would NOT recommend this Giottos type mount to anyone. I wish I would have just bought the (more expensive) quality mount in the first place.

I have to admit.....This is not the EXACT one I own, but I have to assume that Giottos is having the same issues with all their screw clamp type units.
