Product Description

Retaining the rapid camera positioning associated with the Series I ball heads, the Series II range incorporates additional features to ensure that camera positioning can be made with even more precision. In addition to the ball locking lever an additional control allows you to adjust the friction on the ball whilst unlocked, meaning that you can set the friction to suit the weight of your camera and lens combination. With friction applied to the ball you have far greater control over the speed with which the ball will move and ultimately allow more precise positioning. Other features include an additional pan lock control, an extra large weight saving hollowed ball to ensure stability whilst retaining excellent maximum weight capacities.

I bought this head to use with a Konig KN60 tripod (bought off Amazon) when the supplied head gave up working after just over a year of very light use. The tripod was good so I didn't want to just throw it away. After deliberating whether to go the way of Manfrotto or Giottos I decided on this Giottos head, it seemed on paper to be more flexible in design & a bit cheaper. I'm glad I did, what a fantastic item! There's no play in the ball, the controls are silky smooth in operation with a lovely damped feel & the general design & finish is just quality. What look like knurled metal control knobs are in fact contoured hard rubber covered metal, great for gloved hand adjustment & won't make digits sore after a while when using bare handed. The controls are very positive & need very little effort to lock them off so great for people with a weak grip. The lower knob controls the panning lock (again the panning is well damped & very smooth), the smaller knob above controls the variable resistance for when the ball isn't locked & you're adjusting the camera so it doesn't flop about (great for very small adjustments without that unexpected big movement & total loss of composition) & the larger knob controls the actual locking. The heaviest kit I use is a Canon EOS550D + Sigma 50-500mm & the head has no problems at all holding it dead still at any angle. The quick release plate works fine, when attached to your gear you simply push the plate down & it locks itself into place. I would worry slightly about carrying gear around attached to the head as the safety release is just pressing the extra lever in along with the actual release mechanism so I can foresee this could possibly catch on something & release the whole plate.Read more ›

good quality head unit, for a substantial tripod. This is quite big and heavy, but does lock tight even with long telephoto lenses and heavy camera body. Very good locking action with only light turning pressure on control knobs.
Overall operation very smooth - highly recommend

To start with I agree with all of Mr. S. Adams comments he has made in his review.
I found Manfrotto and Gitzo similar units were so very expensive considering the load capacity and the lack of features compared to the Giottos model.
Perhaps you are you paying for their name?
On the small plus side, these manufacturers, in most cases, are using magnesium alloy components to reduce weight, which may be one of your requirements.
The Giottos MH1300-652C Ball Head is manufactured from Aluminium, so is slightly heavier, but very light on price compared to the competition.
The load capacity stated by the manufacturer is 15 Kgs, it is always best to build in a good safety factor, this unit may be way over the top, but you know there will be no slippage on the ball head with your DSLR and glass that you will be attaching on this unit.
There is nothing perfect in this world, but this comes close; but I would guess this unit may have been designed by a photographer.
It is a real pleasure to use and you will not be disappointed with the purchase of this ball head.

This ball-head is very nearly perfect, the mechanisms feel well made and smooth and it easily holds my Canon 5D Mkll + a 2lb lens.
There is a tiny amount of 'give' after tightening the camera in position but it's easy enough to take this into account when in use.
I'm changing the top for an Acra-Swiss type so that it's compatible with my Capture Pro gear, the Giottos plate doesn't fit.

Solid and well made, it's a very good piece of kit.
