Product Description

SYNOPSIS: In the era when one could still but only dream of a comprehensive restoration of Fritz Lang's silent sci-fi epic Metropolis, esteemed pop artist/producer and pioneering electronic composer Giorgio Moroder followed his work on Brian De Palma's cult-classic Al Pacino vehicle Scarface by assembling his own version of Lang's 1920s classic. The result was a zeitgeist-infused, high-kitsch/high-art amalgam of some of the quintessential cinema images and then-contemporary 1980s pop-chart melodrama.

For millions around the world, it is this version of Metropolis - featuring music by Moroder himself and artistes such as Adam Ant, Pat Benatar, Freddie Mercury, Bonnie Tyler, and Jon Anderson which first comes to mind whenever mention is made of the Lang original or, indeed, the iconic imagery and power of silent cinema.

Eureka Entertainment are proud to present a new restoration of Giorgio Moroder's cult reworking of Fritz Lang's Metropolis for the very first time on DVD in the UK - a bizarre and beautiful retro-futurist timepiece which continues to speak of the past, present, and future...available on DVD and limited edition DVD Steelbook.

SPECIAL DVD EDITION:
  • New high-definition restoration from rare original 35mm elements
  • Original stereo and 5.1 surround audio options
  • The Fading Image, a vintage documentary from 1984 detailing the creation of Moroder's reconstruction

Maybe this is not a "real" version of the movie that Lang conceived, but this version has to be rated as it deserves. Moroder tried to restore the original film with all means he had. But he also add something more to this masterpiece: the 80's "videoclip-style", a kind of cinematographic aesthetics which we can recognize in lots of movies released in that decade. I think this can be considered as a plus, not an offence to the original film and its creator.

I rated only four stars for this edition because of its not-very-good sound and the absence of any booklet or a little more extra features.

Besides, I think Metropolis is a movie with a special magnetism, a magical looking-forward to the future from 1926 that Lang turned into a timeless classic. Its plot, characters, film direction and expressionistic style made of Metropolis a real piece of art, much more than an average movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting 1984 different mix 14 July 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Ok Metropolis has been rehashed several times over the last 2-3 decades and I know of at least 6 different versions. This Giorgio Moroder 1984 version is uniquely different and has music by Moroder, Freddie Mercury, Pat Benatar, Adam Ant, Bonnie Tyler, Loverboy, Billy Squier and Cycle V. The previous reviewer gave it 1 star which I think is very harsh. 1/5 you might as well not like any part of the film. But its Metropolis, one of the greatest scifi films of all time, its a marvel for its time (1926), just with different a music take and length than some other longer versions. Personally, I like it a lot, its different, dont get me wrong, I love the 118minute (2001 Extended Restored version complete with original German intertitles, Original Gottfried Huppertz score, newly arranged by Berndt Heller (2002 Murnau Foundation 75th Anniversary Restored Version)), 139minute (Director's Cut New Score), 150minute (2010 Version Reconstructed And Restored) and 115minute (1986 Filmmuseum Munich Edition) minute versions that have been released over the years. So I still give it 5/5. This is also the first time this 1984 Moroder version has been available on DVD here in the UK, it was last out on VHS back in the 1990s. The best format of this 1984 Moroder version comes out on steelbook DVD on 23 July and a standard DVD on 29 October. No Blu-Ray though strangely.

4.0 out of 5 stars Punchy and Concise 12 May 2013

Fritz Laing aficionados will also own the longer, more recent version, containing all recovered footage, featuring the
original orchestral score. For entertainment value, Moroder's presentation is the superior product; 84 minutes is quite
long enough to wonder at the visual brilliance of Laing's direction, the pop score is, arguably, of higher quality than
the unremarkable 'classical' original.

A good, accompanying documentary about flammability and deterioration in old film, but one star off for lack of a decent
booklet about Laing and "Metropolis"; Moroder's note does not do!
