RICCARDO CHAILLY – BIOGRAPHY
“Since its founding more than 250 years ago . . . the Gewandhaus Orchestra has gone through 18 music directors, including Mendelssohn, and many changes. The new dyna¬mism that this eminent orchestra displayed . . . is surely attributable to its 19th music director, the Italian conductor Riccardo Chailly. After Tuesday night’s concert ended ... The most heroic of verismo operas... 29 May 2000
By Susan Hernandez - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This opera is one of my all time favorites. The story based on the true life story of French patriot and poet, Andrea Chenier is inspiring both in music and the libretto. (They did invent the romance, but I can forgive them that!) This recording is very good and I can't recommend another that is better. The main strength of this recording is Pavarotti's full voice (in his prime) rendering of Chenier. This is a tenor role that demands great high notes and endurance. The part of Maddelena is aptly handled by Caballe. She as always, has terrific pianissimos to die for, but she sounds a little harsh and old at times on the forte passages and on the low notes. Nucci is a small voiced, dry sounding Gerard, but with such music it is difficult to make it any less than it is. Unless you just sing the wrong notes! Tom Krause is great as Roucher (I would've like to hear him as Gerard!) Riccardo Chailly conducts with power and restraint- his tempos are just right. The real stars of this opera are Illica's beautiful poetic libretto and Giordano's heroic music. I also recommend the video with Carreras and Marton. If you are a movie fan, it may also be of interest that the aria in the movie Philadelphia with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington contains the aria "La Mamma Morta" from this opera, with Maria Callas instead of Caballe.

No competition!! 7 Jun 2001

This is the ultimate Chenier recording that exists. In this recording, we see the level of dramatic and musical intensity that the composer required of the performers. Pav's rendition of the title role reminds us of how this opera is a great promotional medium for the tenor..(he sings the Improvisso with such deceptive ease and lyricism). Caballe does a satisfactory job at potraying Maddalena de Coigny, she does tend to push every now and then, but it does not distract the listener from the great character delineation that she achieves. Leo Nucci is a satisfying Gerard and does a great job with "Nemico della patria". Over all, the solos are done excellently and the final duet is intensely emotional. Chailly leads the entire crew into a very memorable recording, a very respectable tribute to one of the best verismo operas ever written.

Giordano: Andrea Chenier / Pavarotti, Caballé, Nucci, Chailly 3 Dec 2011
By Bjorn Viberg - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Giordano: Andrea Chenier / Pavarotti, Caballé, Nucci, Chailly is a 1984 Decca Record Company Limited recording starring the immortal Luciano Pavarotti. Riccardo Chailly leads the National Philharmonic Orchestra. William Weaver has written the music notes. The lyrics are available in German, French, English and Italian. Pavarotti is on his A game and his performance is awesome. Truly an opera experience not to be missed. A tremendous recording that I feel Giordano himself would have been pleased to listen to. Highly recommended indeed. 5/5.

Perhaps not all the recording could be. 16 Dec 2007
By Richard Threadgall - Published on Amazon.com

I recently discovered that I own the only recording of Reich's Tehillim that allows the music to be as excellent as it actually is--namely the red one on the Cantaloupe label; the other two or three are so unfortunately recorded that, had I only heard them, I would have dismissed "The Desert Music" (presently my favorite recording in my collection) as a mediocre comoposition and been unable to recognize "Tehillim" itself as the work of genius it actually is.

To the point, I suspect that this recording of De Stijl suffers from the same flaw. The choral component of the composition sounds muffled.

Granted, Andriessen is a postmodernist and is full of awful ideas about what music should sound like, but the energy and clarity of the instrumental parts of "De Stijl" suggest to me that something has gone wrong in the process of performance and recording.

Of course, I doubt we'll ever have a second recording.

"M is for Man" etc. on the other hand was excellent, though (to my reading) it carries some fairly ideologically toxic implications about the nature of man and his place in the world. I dislike the style of singing which Andriessen has written for--"Blend the boundaries of high and low culture" jazz-influenced nastiness--but that's the condition of music in our century, I suppose.

hot & cold 7 Feb 2008
By Perry Townsend - Published on Amazon.com

I agree w/klangfarben: "De Stijl" is a rollicking good time, yet also somehow haunting and slightly disturbing ... in a good way. =) The placement of the Mondrian monologue at the golden-section point of the piece just plain works -- exactly how defies description. Why is it even there?? Louis is not saying; maybe Piet can tell us... I'll have to remember to stare at some Mondrian and ponder this. Anyway, it's a fabulous, audacious piece, performed with muy cajones!

"M is for Man" on the other hand is schlocky, occasionally funny, but basically shallow & unsatisfying. Maybe it works better with the television graphics, but just on its own music-wise, esp. alongside "De Stijl", it falls flat. Fortunately "De Stijl" takes up the bulk of the disc, thus my 4-stars. What really irritates me about the recording though is: there is *NO* silent space at all between the end of the huge, 25-minute "De Stijl" and the beginning of "M is for Man"! We SOOOOO need time to digest "De Stijl" on its own & let it settle -- and most importantly to hit Stop before that other damn thing starts. :p
