Rossini's masterpiece is my favourite opera and I have seen many versions, some good, some ok, and, rarely, some absolutely SUBLIME.....this Royal Opera House production definitely fits the latter description. Famous for the accident to the leading lady, Joyce Di Donato who badly injured her foot and true to the 'show must go on tradition' continued the run with the staging amended to accomodate her wheelchair bound performance. We must feel very lucky that she did continue, as her Rosina is perfection, voice soaring and character filled with all the capriciousness that Rosina is famous for. Under 'Maestro' Pappano's baton the music races along beautifully and the rest of the cast make for a wonderfully uplifting performance. Juan Diego Florez? what more can one say about this superb Bel Canto singer? His Almaviva is vital, energetic, funny, emotional. The peerless Alessandro Corbelli makes a hugely amusing Don Basillio, Rosina's cunning guardian, bringing every bit of his vast experience to the fore. As Don Bartolo, Feruccio Furlanetto is magnificent...so creepy and so hilarious.
So to the 'barber' himself.....Pietro Spagnoli......From his impressive entrance, along the aisles, seeking out audience members as prospective customers, this Figaro is vital,up for the main chance, a dealer, a mover and shaker. Spagnoli has a wonderfully rich voice and perfect comic timing. The opera is a great ensemble piece and the whole cast interact with one another, quite obviously enjoying themselves and providing an evening of pure class and great enjoyment. Uplifting, funny, absolutely awesome.
