2.0 out of 5 stars Borrows too much from other sources!, 26 Sep 2004
By A Customer
This book was disappointing in that it seemed to retell much that has been written elsewhere - particularly Simon Garfield's "The Nations Favourite" and "Freak or Unique" by David Jones. It's true these books (and others) are credited in the text, but that's possibly because the author relied so heavily on them instead of sourcing his own material.

If you've read nothing else on the life and times of Chris Evans then you'll enjoy this book. If you've already read Garfield or Jones accounts of the Evans' phenomenon then this work will sadly seem just a rehash :(

5.0 out of 5 stars Evans Uncovered!!!, 16 Jun 2003
By A Customer
I really enjoyed this book. Chris Evans has to be one of the most amazing characters ever. He came from nowhere, became one of the best TV presenters in the world, had loads of fantastic-looking girlfriends and then turned himself into a multi-millionaire before marrying a young pop star. Excellent work! Johnson's book is great because it uncovers so many facts about Chris that I never knew. Did you know he was sacked from his first job at Piccadilly Radio in Manchester for telling a bad taste joke on air, went away on holiday when his girlfriend was heavily pregnant with his only child and is so scared of normal social situations he can't got to dinner parties? I didn't. Johnson has spoken to loads of people who know Chris well and while some of them obviously don't like him very much (Jamie The Student from Radio One seems to really hate him now) they all have loads of respect for his talent.
There can't be many lives that have been this action-packed and the author has obviously spent plenty of time researching Chris. There are some great quotes from the man himself about his bizarre life and after reading the book you end up feeling that you really know him. I pretty much read 'Ginger Nuts' from cover to cover and enjoyed every minute of it. It's not just a cheap and cheerful effort, but an in-depth look at what makes Chris Evans tick. And 'Ginger Nuts' is right. The man is crazy! But incredible too.
