1.0 out of 5 stars Pointless film 20 Dec 2012
Format:DVD
This film starts with some intrigue, in the shape of an older guy picking up a young hitch-hiker and inviting her back to his house, but loses its way pretty quickly and descends into farce and cliché. Other characters appear, but their purpose is unclear, and the plot is very predictable. Were it not for Sissy Spacek, whose is the only watchable performance as the hippie hitch-hiker, the film wouldn't even warrant a single star. Overall, a very poor piece of work, both in its conception and its execution.

2.0 out of 5 stars Romantic drama with wasted potential 23 April 2002
By A Customer
Format:DVD
Ginger in the Morning is actually very different of every movie I have seen this far. Cover tells that it's romantic drama and true classic of that genre, must to have for every fan that type. Well, I weren't fan before I saw this movie and I'm definitely not afterwards. This movie has so many bad sides, so I don't even know where to start listing them.

There isn't actually much of story behind whole movie, and that little is naive and very illogical, it has few totally idiotic plot-twists and ending is real cliche. Whole movie hasn't any of real surprises, although movie tries it all the time. Dialogue itself is occasionally well written, nothing amazing but nothing very bad either.

Cast has everything from every category. Oliver and Miller are little less than mediocre, in my opinion slight overacting can be seen. Markham is above average, he doesn't do anything what I could complain about, but after all, he doesn't anything great either. So called "extras", like the sheriff and taxidriver, are just annoying. Only one who really is something in this movie is Spacek. She's young and it can be clearly seen why this actress is going be one of the most respected ones in movie-business. Her acting is great, her style in this movie is different than in the ones after this. She also gives us few examples how good singer she is, as she sings in all original songs on the movie. Last but not least, she looks amazing, even in this early movie she had that wonderful smile that could melt ice-blocks from distance. She is looks cute and sounds adorable too. Actually, she is the only reason why I were able to watch this movie through.

Strangest thing in whole movie was that it didn't seem bad at all at first. Markham's and Spacek's growing attraction during beginning of the film is sweet and very charming, it was fun to watch it. But then, at the beginning of scene six, exactly 36 minutes from beginning, when Miller's character shows himself for very first time, whole image breaks and so well started movie turns to bunch of annoying and stupid scenes, totally without any real relation to each other. Only time ever when I see this enermous change, from steady rise to straight downward spiral.

DVD-edition is ridiculous. There isn't even lightest noise-reduction either in audio or image, audio crackles like old, very worn LP. Every high-pitched sound distorts horribly and sound is all the way very hollow. Picture isn't any better either. Print has much dust and scratches, and it can be clearly seen that master reel slowed down few times and caused terrible errors to both picture and audio. Contrast and colors in general are unbalanced and far from natural. Last and but definitely not least, the picture is brutally butchered to 4:3 panscan during mastering, it can be seen clearly during opening titles as sides of texts are cut off.

There's no reason for ordinary people to buy this, what I can say about it with my little experience of genre, this isn't even good as romantic drama. For fans of Spacek, I really suggest that you wait for better release, this version isn't definitely worth of anything. This disc is only good for trap-shooting.
