I have been a fan of Ginger Baker since my early teens - Disraeli Gears by Cream was my first album.
Through the years I have grown to appreciate Gingers ability, general musicianship and his skill. I have enjoyed his music from Baker Gurvitz Army through to the jazz-oriented recordings of the last decade.
Sadly there is not very much available on DVD to enjoy - so I was very pleased to see this.
The quality is not brilliant, I am guessing it was not recorded with the initial objective of commercial release as a DVD. However, the quality is easily good enough to allow the viewer to enjoy the performance. It has the feel of a private recording of a private party that was released when they realised the quality was good enough to do so. I for one am very pleased that they did so.
It has a relaxed live-feel, one number slides into the next, few between-number announcements.
Ginger is one of the most musical of rock/jazz drummers. He really "plays" the drum-kit as an instrument rather than merely providing time-keeping and frills. I actually think that aspect of his playing comes through particularly in his Baker Gurvitz days, but of course it is seen here also.
I think a fan who only knows Ginger as a rock drummer, or whose interest is much more strongly in "rock" than other musical styles, would be dissappointed in this performance. But I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It was a nice bonus to find a separate CD of the music included with the DVD, it saves me ripping the soundtrack to my MP3.
For Ginger baker fans searching for other DVDs of Ginger - then the 2005 Cream reunion concert is an obvious choice - but I would also recomment this recording from Baker Gurvitz Army:
FreedomI recall seeing Ginger with Baker Gurvitz Army on the BBC "In Concert" series in 1975 shortly after releasing their first album (which I still listen to regularly) - now, if that recording were ever found/released on DVD I would snap it up.
