This is the fifth volume in ASV's instructive, recommendable and thorough exploration of the works of Alberto Ginastera--the leading Argentinian composer of modern times (well, of all time really) although his country treated him so badly that it hardly deserves to claim him for itself. He died an exile--and the music on this disc follows a comparable route, from the serene, mildly astringent nationalism of early works like the Cantos del Tucuman (for mixed ensemble and Indian drums) to the later and tougher Puena No.2 (for solo cello) which remembers South America through the acquired experience of European serialism. Ginastera's lighter music can sound empty, with a vague, directionless inconsequentialty, but at its best it's saturated with evocative, exotic pleasures well-delivered on this disc which also serves as a memorial to the cellist Christopher van Kampen who died shortly after the recording. --Michael White
