Book Description

1 Mar 2012

Learn the importance of routine from Gertrude Fjörd-Mettöd, how to Have It All from Queen Victoria (mother of seventeen and Empress of India), how to tell which twin is the Good One and which the Evil, how to turn a Bad Seed into a Good Egg, how to take your charge from Infancy to Infantry (3-21), and of course all about the Medicinal benefits of Gin and Tobacco.

Liberally sprinkled with authentically hilarious Victoriana illustrations, including advertisements for Bob the Empire Builder toys ('Can we annex it? Yes we can!'), 'Who's the Pater' longjohns and the amazing steam-powered breast pump (no fatalities since April!), Gin & Juice will make parents everywhere wish it were 1896.

Product Description

Review

Illustrated in the style of Boz, it contains a lot of sound advice: forget that organic nonsense: give them gin, tobacco, trifle and dunk them in leeches (Daily Telegraph Review, Books of the Year )

For those who like their pregnancy and babycare advice with a good dose of tongue-in-cheek humour (Mother and Baby )

This book is the perfect antidote to those preachy parenting tomes you occasionally come across that leave you feeling somewhat substandard when you consider your own slapdash parenting approach ... a wonderfully refreshing compendium packed full of facts and trivia that could certainly set the cat among today's parenting pigeons ... Just goes to show how much parenting techniques go in and out of vogue (Junior )

Parenting advice from experts of the Victorian era. Chapters include how to discern which is the good twin and which the evil. The perfect look book (The Lady )

[It] gives tongue-in-cheek advice from the likes of 'Gertrude Fjord-Mettod' and Queen Victoria, alongside advertisements for Bob the Empire Builder toys ('Can we annexe it? Yes we can!') and retro illustrations (Independent on Sunday )

Book Description

Thanks to this attractive and authoritative compendium, hapless modern-day parents will at last profit from the wisdom of an era when Britain led the world in matters of industry, empire and child-rearing...

5.0 out of 5 stars Gin & Juice is awesome 7 May 2012
Format:Hardcover
Gin and Juice is amazing! I have been laughing out loud to myself while reading it, in public and in private. It is a hilarious spoof on all the modern day parenting guides (Gina Ford and Tiger Mother, watch out!), set in the Victorian times. The illustrations are just as funny and are beautifully done. I loved it so much, I already bought nearly a dozen of them as gifts for my friends and family members who are parents-to-be, new parents, or experienced mamas and papas. You won't be sorry you got it (and your tired, fed-up friends with all all those rugrats will thank you for the laughs as well).

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome 3 April 2012
Format:Hardcover
As a recent parent to two young babies, this hilarious tome and its particularly funny illustrations helped lighten the load of sleepless nights, nappies and loud toys. There's advice on how to judge what baby you are having, the joys of a (stately) home birth and more. Completely ridiculous, but in a very good way.
