About the Author

Jan Smith has been taking photos for more than 20 years; her photos have been reproduced in a range of media. In 2000 she studied digital imaging at the Adelaide Central School of Art and moved from the darkroom to digital editing with relief. Jan discovered GIMP nine years ago while volunteering at Computerbank (a company that refurbishes donated computers and sells them cheaply to low income people to help bridge the digital gap). Jan has assisted hundreds of low-income people become familiar with computers loaded with open-source software. She has developed a solid grasp of the way beginners learn to use software. Jan has worked as a technical writer for Infrae in the Netherlands and for companies using open-source software in Australia. She was elected Vice President of the Zope Foundation in 2010. She has a background in radio journalism, technology and production, and is the assistant manager of 3ZZZ, Australia s largest multilingual community radio station. Jan brought open-source software into 3ZZZ to improve the not-for-profit organization s workflows.

This book is ok, but I don't really think it was very concise for beginners. In the areas I needed the most help I ended up going to u tube to get clearer advice.

GIMP book for beginner! 13 Aug 2012
By hjd - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I have zero experience in photoshop, and needed to do some photoediting. Tried to download photoshop, but apparently, it was a huge download, and the license was around $600(!).

Luckily, I was recommended GIMP, and downloaded the program in a minute, and not only that, the program cost a grand total of $0. (Yes, GIMP is free!)

There are many tutorials in the book, but I found out that for me, the most important part of the book was the "CLONING" tool, as I removed some unnecessary objects from what would otherwise be a perfect picture. I got the picture touched up, and now have a very pleased partner!

Nicely written, and the author assumes ZERO Gimp knowledge, so it truly IS for beginners :) 10 Jan 2013

The Author (Jan Smith) is to be commended for an extremely well written book, that will have you up and running on the free alternative to Photoshop in no time :)

Great guide for the uninitiated 14 Nov 2013

My wife needed a book to use as a teaching tool for high school students. This book offers an easy to read, step by step guide for using GIMP. I've been using GIMP for years and am impressed by the book's clarity and ease of use. Highly recommended for beginners.

How-to ... from the beginning 30 Mar 2013
By Anna Erishkigal - Published on Amazon.com

I knew very little about GIMP and it was difficult to teach myself. Surfing YouTube videos while simultaneously manipulating a picture (all on the same screen) got a bit tricky. This book takes you through the most basic steps, from downloading/opening GIMP onto your computer to how to use the toolbars to how to do some of the most common tasks. I'm no digital artist after reading this book, but I was able to upload images, manipulate and layer them, add graphics and special effects, and save it in a variety of formats so am happy with my investment.

Delivers as the title says. 23 Jun 2012
By Randai - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
As the title says its GIMP for Absolute Beginners.

I am not an absolute beginner in the sense of needing to be shown how to use an application or concepts such as that. So the chapters in the book on that weren't really suited for me, but would be very useful for an "Absolute Beginner".

Though where the book did really start to shine for my creatively dull mind, is the basics on image manipulation and why you'd even need to perform tasks on images.
As someone whom hadn't even touched a single image editing program and had suddenly been thrust into being required to do simple manipulations with images, I wish I had had a book at the time that could have given me a path along some concepts, instead of having to pester work colleagues for information all the time.

Though since I have moved onto different areas with work its not a day to day requirement for myself, so having a book on hand which can help me refresh on the most basic image manipulations is good for me.

Having a passing interest/hobby of game development I think the digital drawing with GIMP chapters will be of use when I get back into looking at different game engines (notably isometric graphics). Especially since there is a few tutorials/walkthroughs specifically to do with pixel graphics.

All in all, it delivers on the title, which in this day and age seems rare that you get what you are told you will get.
