Reviews

From Amazon.co.uk

When Gimme Gimme Gimme first hit the television screen in 1998, it immediately divided the critics. Plenty loathed it, but it soon acquired cult comedy status in the BBC2 post-watershed tradition. Since then it has gone mainstream on BBC1 but as the first series shows, its appeal lies in a surreal anarchy. Linda (Kathy Burke, brilliant) and Tom (James Dreyfus, who went on to star with Bette Midler in her ill-fated sitcom) live in a world of self-delusion. They are the ultimate misfits; a grotesque ladette who thinks she is "gorgeous" and worships Liam Gallagher and a neurotic gay actor who can't land a decent part for toffee but cherishes a secret passion for Simon Shephard, the smooth star of popular television dramas such as Peak Practice. They trade non-PC insults like most people make small talk (Linda: "There's no such thing as gay. It's just laziness."), yet are totally reliant on each other. It's vulgar, coarse, often outrageous and certainly not for the faint-hearted. But in most parts it is extremely funny. And if the self-regarding cuteness of so many US comedy imports turns your stomach, you'll love it. This is Will and Grace, on cocaine, in a parallel universe.

On the DVD: presented in standard 14:9 format with stereo soundtrack, this disk simply gives you the first series of Gimme Gimme Gimme exactly as it appeared on television. So the picture and sound quality are fine. Just select your favourite episode from the index and laugh away. The lack of extras is disappointing. There must be some great outtakes, which would have added a bit of value; so would biographies of the stars and writer Jonathan Harvey, who has become one of the UK's best young playwrights. --Piers Ford

Disgusting, repulsive and not for the faint of heart, Gimme Gimme Gimme is the pinnacle of depravity and sexual frustration. Tom and Linda are looking for love, but they've got a problem: they're both deeply disturbed individuals. Linda thinks she's "it", comparing herself to Uma Therman and Cameron Diaz, deluded to the point that she's certain the hunk downstairs wants her. Tom's an aspiring actor who can't even get the part of Third Yob on a Crimwatch reconstruction, despite his boundless enthusiasm and energy.

At first glance, Gimme Gimme Gimme seems like a series of half-hour Carry On episodes, but the vulgarity is upped by 70%. Double entendres aplently, but mixed with drug-taking, swearing and clever sexually explicit dialogue. The episodes are also very intelligent, the openly pro-homosexual, anti-racist content so acceptable I've heard sixteen year old males sing its praises without embarrassment. You must buy this. You must buy this now. The Jerry Springer take-off where Tom and Linda have a physical fight, and then both try to seduce the bouncer who attempts to split them up is worth the admission price alone. Shame about the extras, but there'll probably be outtakes and stuff on the Christmas special DVD. Maybe.

LINDA: It's more confusing than Hansel and Gretal.
TOM: Hansel and Gretal isn't confusing.
LINDA: Well when did you last stay in a house you could eat?! IT TWISTS CHILDREN'S MINDS, THAT DOES!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gimme Some More! 6 Oct 2003
Format:DVD
The first series of Gimme Gimme Gimme is extremely good, and very funny. Burke and Dreyfuss play the parts to perfection and the result is a cornucopia of fantastic jokes and real belly-laughs.

'Who's That Boy?' is a marvellous introduction and very good at establishing the characters. 'The Big Break' sees Tom in with a chance at getting a part in a CRIMEWATCH reconstruction, and is also very funny. 'Legs and Co.' is hilarious, and that's all I'm saying. 'Do They Take Sugar?' is another classic episode featuring a pre-EastEnders Elaine Lordan. 'Saturday Night Diva' is satisfactorily funny. But the best episode of the first series is the last one - 'I Do, I Do, I Do'. It features some hysterical moments and Burke and Dreyfuss are flawless in their timing.

All in all, although this isn't the best series of the show (save that for Series 2), it's absolutely brilliant and one of the funniest and most vibrant Britcoms in years.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Dirty" is the order of the day! 10 Oct 2003
Format:DVD
Well, where to begin?! If you have a dirty mind and a slightly off-key sense of humour, then Gimme Gimme Gimme is DEFINITELY the programme for you! Linda "S**g me up a back alley after 15 Babychams" LaHughes and Tom "I'm a good girl I am" Farrell are a couple of lonely, desperate and unquestiontionally depraved flatmates who, not happy with their lot in life, strive to get hold of anything in trousers and get one over on each other. There are some truly cracking and sickening lines and some top acting from all the cast. Episode 5 (Saturday Night Diva) also features a wicked performance in cameo from Mel and Sue as hotel receptionists who offer a good explanation as to why receptionists are always smiling!!! This is so worth owning that you'll wonder how it wasn't in your collection before. Enjoy...

BERYL: "Is he a ventriloquist?"

LINDA: " Well I wouldn't mind him sticking his hand up me skirt and making me lips move!"

Beautiful!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars British comedy at it's best! 1 Oct 2001
Format:DVD
At long last the first series of this brilliant comedy is available to buy. In the first episode we meet the main characters Linda, played by the wonderful Kathy Burke and Tom, played by the hilarious James Dreyfus. These flatmates come from two very different backgrounds but share a common goal, to get a man....any man! With brilliant scripts throughout and great one liners, this series will have you rolling around on the floor with laughter. Fantastic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Make you laugh til you're sick 20 May 2010
Format:DVD
I was a huge fan of this series, but I never saw them all. It was nice to pick this DVD up at a pocket money price and again laugh til you are almost ill.

Linda is such a slapper and Tom a nonce, but together they make a fine team.

A real sofa wetter if ever there was one.

I had forgotten just how brilliant Kathy Burke and James Dreyfus were in this. Sharp as pins and brilliant timing, they squeeze every last drop of juice out of the scripts. Sheer joy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wickedly Funny and Crude Comedy. 21 Oct 2001
Format:VHS Tape
Kathy Burke (Linda)delivers a fabulous performance as the Fag Hag from hell and James Dreyfus (Tom) plays the biggest drama queen you have ever seen. Linda has the best lines as Kathy Burke revels in playing her role. But all the others are well characterised and while the crudeness might not suit some tastes, it had me gasping for breath as each killer punchline is delivered.
If I want a good laugh I always play this.
Too many good lines for me to repeat here, but this is well worth anyones money.
