This is probably the most useable book that Gillian McKeith has written so far. It is essentially a complete compendium that provides a thorough guide to the direct relationship between food and health, looking in detail at the effects we can have on our bodies and our general well being by taking some simple steps. Not only does the book lend itself to being a useful resource to dip into when you need to find out about a condition or illness, it is also immensly readable and has already expanded my knowledge on many areas I was not aware of.

Be prepared though - if you are planning on just dipping in here or there, you may well be sucked into a whole new world and then find yourself clearing the store cupboards of the usual junk and hitting the shops to restock with far healthier alternatives. The advantage being this time you know why your buying certain foods and what the benefits are that will follow.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs a one stop bible for all food and health issues - and that might just be most of us!

1.0 out of 5 stars Nonsense and Pseudoscience 28 Dec 2008
By Jake
Format:Paperback
McKeith is not a medical doctor. Indeed, her degree is a correspondance course from an unacredited American college. Not that this neccesarily matters, but the problem is that this is indicative of McKeith's whole approach: rubbish dressed up as something more through the use of fancy terminology. Sadly, she fails to understand her field entirely and so this book veers between, as its best, mere common sense and, at its worst, potentially dangerous misinformation.

I was recently given this by a friend and I have to say that I was distinctly underwhelmed by the contents. Essentially it's just common sense advice like eating fresh ingredients in moderation, but dressed up in pseudo scientific language. Money would be better spent on a decent cookbook and some ingredients.

5.0 out of 5 stars It does what it says in the book :-)) 23 July 2009
Format:Paperback
I obtained a copy of the book the Food Bible by Gillian McKeith from Amazon after having looked at a friends copy and was amazed at the depth Gillian goes to, to give you the facts behind why certain foods are great to eat and others not so.

It is split up into logical subheadings covering these contents:

Key Health Factors
Foundations of a Healthy Diet
Food & the Stages of Life and
A-Z of Conditions

The font size in the book is a good size so you aren't straining to read it which is a good consideration for viewers with not too good eyesight, and there are large margins so you can write notes in the book if you want to.

Just to give you a snippet of some of the contents on page 32 of the book it talks about complex & simple carbohydrates giving you the reason why simple carbs aren't good for your body this way:

"These foods which also lack fibre behave like sugar in the body causing blood glucose disturbances and cravings; they often contain added sugars too. You may feel angry, tired & irritable.

Complex carbohydrates break down more slowly. This is partly due to the fibre they contain. Fibre slows down the rate at which food is broken down and therefore the rate at which glucose is released into the blood stream. They are also not stripped of their nutrients. End result: sustained energy levels."

I always knew that complex carbs were good for you as im an avid cyclist. Now I know the reason why I am able to cycle longer distances and not feel as hungry as some of my mates who eat just anything!!

Seeing you are already on the Amazon site reading this review wanting to know if the book is worth purchasing: BUY IT !! You'll be glad you did.
