Most Helpful Customer Reviews

This disc is a first-rate demonstration of a remarkable instrument, built in 1974 with an unashamedly Baroque bias. (The only concession to romanticism is a string stop and its Voix Celestes companion on the enclosed secondary manual.)

Gillian Weir plays with vigour and clarity as she takes us through the numerous solos and choruses available. Her programme ranges from early keyboard dances to a Bach choral partita, a gem of a sonata by Franz Schnizer and a Mozart Fantasia. To prove the instrument's versality further she then proceeds to the 20th century and Hindmith's second sonata, beautifully articulated and with numerous changes in registration. (She is no doubt aided here by the recently-installed sequencer.) Finally we hear two suites by Jean Francaix (died 1997).

A fascinating recital from start to finish, this CD makes a fine complement to Gerald Gifford's recording on the instrument in the 1970s (still available), but I think Weir's performance has the edge for clarity and interest.

The late Lawrence Phelps, former Husband of Dame Gillian Weir, built several SPLENDID instruments......
This is one more....
As for Dame Gillian Weir's playing, it goes without saying it's PERFECT, too.....I remember one evening when she was playing on the Royal Festival Hall in 1967, and I was there, looking at her...
Now,she is retiring....It's a little sad....
